Reviews Summary

Casa Toni is celebrated for its authentic, no-frills Spanish tapas, particularly its adventurous offal dishes and classic seafood. Many praise the exceptional service and vibrant, local atmosphere, making it a memorable Madrid experience. However, some diners have noted the restaurant's dated decor and inconsistent food quality, with one review describing it as disappointing.

"Such a gem of a find. We first went to try the famous sizzling garlic prawns, and they didn’t disappoint! The anchovies marinated in vinaigrette were also such a delight! It was so good that we had to visit again another night."

M

"Simple good tapas. Larger portions than normal so must be careful with how many dishes you order it adds up quick. Food was delicious, salty where needed (which is most places). Fav dish: marinated anchovies the largest plate of anchovies I’ve ever seen with an acidic dressing to cut the salt.
Verdict: would return and recommend!!"

Patrick K

"A must-visit for authentic Madrileño tapas! Casa Toni serves up some incredible dishes you won't find everywhere else. On a scorching summer day, their Ensalada de Tomate was a lifesaver – perfectly crunchy, juicy, and incredibly refreshing. We paired it with an ice-cold, non-alcoholic beer and dove into their specialties. The Oreja a la Plancha (grilled pig's ear) was a textural delight – chewy with just the right amount of fat and a fantastic crispy exterior. For the adventurous, the Mollejas (lamb sweetbreads) are a must-try. As a first-timer, I was impressed by the perfect char. There was no hint of any undesirable flavor, just a surprisingly chicken-like texture with a subtle, pleasant bitterness. A truly unique and delicious experience!"

Top 10 tapas bars in Madrid | Madrid holidays

Amid the sea of tourist-trap tapas bars and “Irish pubs” around Madrid’s main Puerta del Sol square, Casa Toni is a rough-and-ready touchstone for real food, keen prices (everything’s under €10) and a warm welcome. Day and night, a motley crew of hungry regulars – from young lads lining their stomachs to sixtysomethings grabbing a bite after the opera – huddle at rough-hewn tables, digging into grilled garlicky mushrooms, eggplant drizzled with honey and the best beer-battered baby cuttlefish I’ve tasted. Those itching to experience some classic Madrid nose-to-tail cuisine should try the creamy mollejas (lamb sweetbreads) and – careful here – a crispy zarajo (fried lamb guts wound around a vine).Calle de la Cruz 14, +34 915 322 580, casa-toni.es.

Best tapas bars in Madrid

Painted ceramic tiles, scarves of local football clubs draped on the shelves and a gallery wall showcasing vintage photographs of famous bullfighters – you can’t get any more castizo (traditionally Spanish) than this tavern in Madrid’s central district. Over an open grill, a cook fires up homemade dishes like fried calamares (squid), garlic mushrooms, orejas (pig’s ears) and morcilla (blood sausage). But if there’s one thing I come here for again and again – it's gambas al ajillo, or sizzling shrimps cooked in olive oil, garlic, parsley and chili.

12 family friendly places to eat in Madrid with kids

Conveniently located less than 10 minutes walking distance from Villa Real, one of the best places to stay in Madrid as a family, Casa Toni is an old-school Madrid establishment famous for its pig ears. While kids may squirm at the thought of trying pork ear, the restaurant also offers a variety of other tapas plates, including fried potatoes with garlic mayonnaise and ham croquettes, for the picky eaters. They may even try a bite of pig’s ear, if you promise them a pastry from the charming Antigua Pastelería del Pozo, located just around the corner, afterwards!

Casa Toni’s claim to fame may be their offal, but believe it or not, they also have a whole section of the menu dedicated to veggie options. We started off with their famous patatas bravas, double-fried potatoes slathered in a red, peppery sauce (which they make in-house, unlike many places). Next up were pimientos de padrón, Galicia’s famous fried green peppers (most are mild, but be careful—some are hot hot hot!).

Must-tries include fried lamb, cuttlefish, shrimp in olive oil and garlic, secreto iberico (Iberian pork), and their signature offal – a crispy pork ear. Pair your tapas either with a bottle of wine (they have a very extensive wine list, so you’ll have plenty of options), or a freshly made jar of sangria.

Madrid restaurant near Sol - first night in Spain

For a more traditional Tapas bar, maybe head to Calle De la Cruz, there are several places; Casa Toni, La Casa del Abuelo, others; where you can look at a menu, get Raciones (appetizer sized plates) and something to drink. For more of a meal, it may be further (a walk will do you good), but I like Los Gatos on Calle Jesus, there are many other places on this street as well.

5 Authentic Madrid Bars Loved by Locals

Found on Calle de la Cruz, this small restaurant definitely stands out against the others, with its worn out awning and window where you can see the chef hard at work. The first thing that you’ll notice while walking into Casa Toni is the chef grilling up portions of pimientos and oreja to a charred perfection. In my opinion, this place has the best sepia ever.
