Another classic Bar del Barrio, there are in fact three branches of Los Diamantes in central Granada, including a shiny new one on Plaza Nueva that is always packed with tourists. For the original and best version of this fried-fish specialist though, you need to head to Calle Navas, a bar-packed, chaotic street off Plaza Isabel la Catolica. Los Diamantes I, as it might be called, is so small that you have to yell your order from the doorway to make yourself heard above the jam of Granadinos – but that’s half the fun of visiting one of the most loved local bars in Granada.

If you get here more than a minute after opening time, you will be trampled under foot by locals in their rush to get to the bar of this tiny white tiled cafe. It may look like a greasy spoon from the outside, but it's always rammed, and with good reason. Seafood, sherry-soaked clams, tempura aubergine and fried bacalao (salt cod) are the tapas on offer here.

Other solid tapas places (tapas are complimentary with every drink order): Saint Germain, the bars of Cunini and Oliver on the Plaza de la Pescadería, the several branches of Los Diamantes for fried fish and other seafood (we prefer the one just beyond Taberna la Tana on Rosario, somewhat hidden away from the tourist circuit.

The bar is local institution and has been going since 1942, it became so popular in fact that they’ve now opened two more bars in the city and two just outside as well.

Los Diamantes has been such a favourite in the city for so long that it has become a small chain, but the original is where it always was on Calle Navas and the same rule applies: get there when it opens or forget it.Small and cramped, it’s the fried fish that draws them in here – clams, razor clams, baby squid, deep fried vegetables, rock salmon. You name it, they’ll fry it for you and serve it up for free with your beer. A must-sea for fish lovers when in town.

Two of the most highly recommended places were within a short walk of our apartment; Los Diamantes and Bodegas Casteneda. Los Diamantes seemed very touristy, right on the main drag....though we did see the original location a bit later on which seemed less so. Bodegas Casteneda an alleyway off the main drag seemed to have a more local clientele.......based on the older local folks who seemed to be making the rounds after (before?) church on this Sunday.

What Los Diamantes (Calle Navas, 6) lacks in interior design finesse, it more than makes up for with generous portions of delicious fried fish. You’re in safe hands at this no-frills joint; the garlicky clams cooked in sherry and the salted cod fritters are highlights. The Calle Navas joint has been going strong since 1942, but for more elbow space, head to the newer, bigger branch on Plaza Nueva.

Los Diamantes, situated on the permanently bustling Calle Navas, is a classic example. Plates come heaped with fresh pescaíto frito (fried fish), unpeeled gambas (king-sized prawns) or freshly prepared paella among other greasy yet gratifying dishes. Despite the modern exterior, there’s a very traditional feel to the place, thanks to the animated locals who typically occupy the bar space.

Los Diamantes is probably the most famous tapas restaurant in Granada and while it is completely overrun with tourists, that does not make it a tourist trap. Los Diamantes is primarily a seafood restaurant, and you’d never expect to get seafood for free, but here you do. The first tapa I was presented was a heaping plate of fried baby sardines and I was immediately impressed.

This Bar Los Diamantes was just as busy as the other we visited but had a different vibe. The people were packed around the bar and at the shelves across from there. Near the entrance were a couple high top tables and the people at the bar would just pass the drinks and food over to the guests that were further than the arm at the bar could reach.

This little hole in the wall specializes in seafood tapas and is packed with locals on a nightly basis. Platefulls of boquerones (tiny fried fish), mounds of steamed mussels, scallops, prawns, dogfish and more creatures of the sea are common tapas served at Los Diamantes. If seafood is not your thing, Los Diamantes is not the place for you.

Their no-frills fabulously fresh seafood is the catch of the day. The place is extremely busy so don’t expect to wait on hand and foot, just grab your order when they call it out and devour the specialties on offer. Prices have stayed low but don’t expect to sit down and have a relaxing meal as this is not what Los Diamantes is about.

Los Diamantes: I’m not personally too much of a seafood fan but if you are, this is the place to go!. Los Diamantes has two a variety of locations and is always a top granadina recommendation. The tapas are not to order, however, so explicitly ask when you order your drink if you dislike a certain seafood.

Calle Navas 28 From the outside it seems there is nothing special about this place. But you only have to pass by the bar at the height of lunch or dinner service to see there is indeed something special going on!. I say it for a lot of tapas bars, but for Los Diamantes you must get there early.

It is hard to have a “best of” list without mentioning Los Diamantes. If you are in the mood for a quick beer and some excellent fried seafood, then it is hard to beat this bar. It has a bit more of a classic diner feel than some of the more traditional bars and is primarily for the beer drinker.

Here we enjoyed some Tinto de Veranos, Cervesas, and absolutely delicious seafood tapas. I would recommend just having lunch here after you enjoy a few free tapas if you are still hungry. We walked to Los Manueles down the street (per our tour guides recommendation) and it was good, not great.

There’s a few locations, so no matter where you are or where you're headed this is always a safe bet. It’s always crowded, so if you're looking to sit down, this is probably not the spot for you. Their tinto de verano and Alhambra beer are super cheap.
