A block north of Plaza de la Candelaria and on one of Cádiz's narrow pedestrian streets, La Candela is a good place to try local fare with a modern twist. The salmorejo comes baked with pork loin tartare, the bao candela is melt-in-the-mouth tender, and several dishes come tempura-style or have South American touches, such as the sea bass ceviche with tiger's milk and mango. There's a good choice of vegetarian dishes.

This is one of the fancier places in Cádiz (and that shows in the prices), but for the quality of ingredients and attention to detail on presentation and flavours it is money well-spent. It calls itself a tapas bar but the size (and price) of the plates is more in keeping with a restaurant. The decor and the cuisine are modern but not pretentious.

The La Candela Tapas Bar gets a big recommendation from the Spanish Sabores website that’s dedicated to Spanish recipes, cuisine, and restaurant reviews. And it’s the second-best ranked place to eat in Cadiz on TripAdvisor. Some of the customers even rate the food at La Candela as better than what you’ll get at some places with Michelin Stars.

I don’t know why we didn’t eat more at Casa Lazo, but when we got hungry for a later meal, we went to La Candela which had rave reviews in that same Facebook group. Described as a fusion tapas bar, we sat at the counter and shared a pork taco for an app and an overly large porterhouse steak that came with a generous portion of fries and padron peppers on top. Both were very good, but we definitely didn’t need the giant steak.

When a restaurant is heralded as the best tapas in Cadiz, I had to experience it for myself and Candela lived up to it’s reputation. Authentic Spanish vibe, great food, fun and helpful waiters and I was shocked at how cheap it all was!. If you fancy some of the best tapas then definitely book – I tried emailing, DMs and calling and failed so enlisted a friend who grew up in Cadiz to help!

I loved this Cadiz tapas bar so much that I dedicated a post to our outstanding lunch there. I almost don't want to go back, just in case it doesn't measure up. This small restaurant is the definition of what I search out—clean and fresh flavors, creativity that doesn't cross into the bizarre, and the highest-quality products you can find.

La Candela, located on Feduchy Street, will make you fall in love as soon as you walk in. It’s a small and cozy place, with a colorful and cute decoration. Its tapas are different and innovative and its vegan dishes will not disappoint you.

For a more modern take on Tapas, La Candela has great dishes like the Smoked Eggplant with Goat Cheese. I especially love their cocktails. Listed as a dessert, the Strawberry Mojito Sorbet is served layered in a tall glass with fruit.
