Reviews Summary

Cal Pep is celebrated for its incredibly fresh seafood and lively atmosphere, particularly for those seated at the bar watching the chefs in action. Diners rave about the unique 'no menu' experience and the consistently excellent, flavorful dishes. However, some find the prices to be on the higher side, and the long wait times can be a deterrent for those without reservations.

"Super cozy tapas place. Enjoyed it a lot. It’s either you book the restaurnt area with proper seating or walk in. If you do walk in be prepared to stand in queue. The food is great. And the point here is that you give them your budget and tell them your preferences and they choose for you. There is no so called menu. Very nice place. But be prepared for a lot of oil😂"

Veronica Derevyanko

"Though there was as a bit of a wait as it was busy spot to eat, it was worth it. The experience was incredible. We sat in the entry/bar area which provided a view of the chef's preparing the food. The service staff were fun and friendly. The food was spectacular. Get everything! 😂🤤"

The quality of the food is superb there's so much variety with a lot of the dishes, since there's no menu everything is a pleasant surprise.

The chefs are very skilful as each dish tastes lovely with the Catalan style.

The staff were very friendly and provided good service.

The ambiance is the right balance.

Easy 10/10"

The 10 Best Cultural Restaurants In Barcelona

Cal Pep is a crowded tapas bar in the fashionable El Born district and one of the most popular venues in Barcelona. Always filled with locals and visitors in a buzzing atmosphere, Cal Pep offers an excellent selection of Mediterranean cuisine prepared with fresh seasonal products, and always recommends the day’s best food, from fish and seafood to meat and vegetables. The extensive variety found on its menu features tapas alongside generous main courses – squid, shrimp, botifarra with beans and Spanish omelette and seafood paella are among some of the specialties.

The Infatuation

The 25 Best Restaurants In Barcelona - Barcelona

The Spanish tortilla at Cal Pep—one of Barcelona’s most storied tapas counters, a rambunctious, laid-back bar in El Born—is forever destined to ruin all potato and chorizo omelets that come after it. Maybe it’s the smooth exterior blended with a molten inside that oozes goo as you cut into it, or the extra zing of the added aioli and chorizo (yes, it’s fine to add chorizo to tortilla, just not to paella—sorry, Jamie Oliver). Of course, there’s more to this joint than half-cooked eggs.

Top dishes here include the Spanish omelet with chorizo sausage (arguably the best tortilla in the city), the tuna tartare, the grilled monkfish, the whole grilled squid, the baby squid and chickpea casserole, as well as any specials of the day. For the full Cal Pep experience, you’ll want a seat at the bar, but, unfortunately, so does everyone else. Plan to wait in line for at least half an hour (and longer if you're a party larger than two).

It's been in a permanent feeding frenzy for more than 30 years, intensified by hordes of tourists, but this loud, hectic bar manages to keep delivering the very highest quality tapas, year-in and year-out. Be prepared to wait up to an hour for a place at the counter; reservations for the tables in the tiny back room and on the outdoor terrace are accepted, but the counter is where the action is.

Cal Pep does have a cosy dining room at the back and a terrace to the side, but if you sit there you’ll miss all the fun. Better to stand at the bar (or wait your turn patiently behind those at the bar) and watch the cooks working the stoves. There is no shtick here apart from superbly fresh seafood, served simply and on plates designed for sharing.

11 of the best restaurants in Barcelona for 2025

First opened back in 1989, this old-school tapas haunt in the thick of El Born is a Barcelona classic and still retains a local following, even if more of a mixed crowd spills out the door these days. Grabbing a glass of wine or cavawhile you wait (a while) for a spot to free up at the brown-marble bar is all part of the fun, though there’s also a small stone-walled dining area with bookable tables. Come lunch and dinner, people pile in for star dishes like the gooey cooked-to-order tortilla and the delicately fried trifàsic of squid, fish and shrimp drizzled with lemon, some of them whipped up behind the counter.

But if you’re going to partake in this lovely tradition, you may as well do it right, with an old school bodega filled with locals hanging out as if it were their own living room. Head to Ca’l Pep to hang with them and enjoy a sweet vermouth or glass of cava, and don’t forget the snacks.
