Reviews Summary

Woo Lae Oak is celebrated for its historic significance and signature Pyeongyang Naengmyeon, with many praising the authentic flavors and rich broth. The Bulgogi is also a highly recommended dish, appreciated by generations. However, diners frequently mention extremely long wait times and sometimes chaotic or inattentive service, which can detract from the overall experience.

"Absolutely superb noodles! The balance of firmness and chewiness was perfect 👌, and its nuttiness was fantastic 💥 The broth had so many layers of flavour with slightly ligering umami. I didn't need any extra seasoning. It was extremely busy and high turnovers, but the staff were pretty attentive and prompt."

Marianna SH Kim

"The food wasn't bad, although we expected something better after such high ratings. The biggest downside to this restaurant is its service and the feeling that you are participating in a food race. The staff is inattentive and chaotic. It is clear that the restaurant is focused on serving as many guests as possible quickly. Waiters shouting at each other should not be a hallmark of a restaurant with so many Michelin awards. We were disappointed with this place."

Aleksander Pławski

"We arrived at 2 pm. Shocked to see many people queuing. There were 81 teams before us when we took the queue number. Waited for around 1 1/2 hrs. The naengmyeon taste delicious - noodle goes well with the sliced pear, white kimchi, savoury beef broth and kimchi side dish. Also order beef with rice - generous amount of beef but I think it needs to be salted (they didnt provide salt).

Side note - While waiting, check out Add Coffee beside. Their tarts are good."

This bulgogi (marinated beef) and mul-naengmyun (buckwheat noodles in iced broth) restaurant is a veteran in the capital’s dining scene. Woolaeoak was originally established by a family escaping North Korea during the WWII era, and crowds of seniors still wait in line to get their weekly fix at the legendary eatery. In the past few years, naengmyun’s popularity has been revived with the younger generations – meaning you’ll see plenty of hashtagging hipsters in addition to silver-haired foodies.

9 Best Seoul Restaurants worth visiting - March 2023

I used to visit this restaurant with my dad and family back in the 70’s when I was a kid. The original owner is a good friend of my father – a fellow North Korean (Yibuk Saram 이북사람) who escaped during the war. They serve the classic North Korean style Naengmyeon that’s clean tasting, not sweet or sour – unlike many Naengmyeon you taste in today’s modern restaurants.

Woo Lae Oak (우래옥) is known to serve the best Pyeongyang Naeng Myun in Korea ( 평양냉면, Pyeongyang cold buckwheat noodle) and BBQ beef in Korea since 1946. The beef broth is much meatier than at any other Naeng Myun restaurants in Korea and the noodle is perfectly cooked. Their BBQ beef is also spectacular and many cuts above standard BBQ, especially Bulgogi.
