With more than 26 shopping malls, 30,000 specialty shops and 50,000 manufacturers, Dongdaemun is the centre for fashion lovers in Seoul. Not only does the sprawling market offer clothes and accessories at an affordable price, it also has some of the most unique items, as it’s home to many of the city’s aspiring designers. Open at just about any hour, Dongdaemun is one of the few places in the world where you can shop till you drop at 3am.

Starting from 5:00PM and onwards, you will start to see food stalls filling up the main street with fares like gyerangbbang (Korean egg bread), dak-galbi (spicy stir fried chicken),etc..

Our boys loved watching the “chefs” work their magic right in front of them. Wait times at popular stalls can be long and prices are more on the high side, but you pay for the experience. Our favourites here were the grilled chicken skewers, grilled super fat squid tentacles and the bungeoppang (fish-shaped bread with sweet red bean filling).

The more modern Myeongdong ‘street food alley’ had a completely different vibe. Even though it is just as much of an international shopping haven as it is food destination, the street food here is something else. If you’re doing a full-on food market hopping day, I’d recommend coming to this market at night to experience it in full action.

Possibly the most popular market on this list, Myeongdong Market has a mix of street food, clothing shops, cafes, restaurants, and boutiques. This is the place everyone must visit when in Seoul. the vibrant atmosphere is immediately noted when arriving in Myeongdong, as the neon signs, open shop doors, and bustling crowds flow all around.

There are 5 Joseon Dynasty palaces in Seoul, of which Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung are the most popular to visit. There’s no denying that they’re stunningly gorgeous by daylight, but if you see them in Seoul at night, it’s something you’ll never forget. Wear a hanbok for free entry into Gyeongbokgung Palace at night.

This guided night market food tour that took us through the oldest market in Seoul, called Gwangjang Market. I cannot rave more about this experience with a knowledgeable local guide, and it’s a wonderful thing to do first when you arrive in Seoul.

If you still have some steam left in the evening, I highly recommend heading to Myeong Dong night market in Seoul with kids. It is not too far from Namsan and runs daily from 5 pm. The night market comes to life just as the sun sets over Seoul.
