Reviews Summary

Dusk offers an extraordinary fine-dining experience with exceptional food and impeccable service that consistently wows guests. While the intimate ambiance is lauded, some diners noted minor atmospheric or service attentiveness issues during peak times. Despite these occasional observations, the culinary artistry and dedication to sustainability leave a lasting impression.

"Dined at Dusk recently and I enjoyed the Odyssey Tasting menu paired with wine for every course, the food was definitely the highlight, with creative presentation and interesting story behind every dish with a name given based on the type of dish.

The service was also incredible with multiple waiters and experienced Sommelier’s to provide the utmost information to assist with the enjoyment of the pairing.

The atmosphere is also incredible with a single light above each table to isolate you and your dining partner. However the one table had a light lower than the other tables which forced us to move to a table, if the light could be repaired this could improve the atmosphere for whoever is unfortunate enough to get that one table."

Marc de Chasteauneuf

"We had a lovely experience at Dusk, even though it didn’t start out as planned. I had mistakenly booked for the Monday instead of Sunday, but the team was incredibly accommodating and managed to fit us in without any fuss – a much-appreciated gesture.

The food was absolutely delicious, and I opted for the food and cocktail pairing, which was a refreshing and unique change from the usual wine pairing. Each course was beautifully thought out, and the flavours were well balanced.

That said, the atmosphere felt a little cold – not unwelcoming, but lacking a bit of warmth or vibe that could’ve elevated the overall experience. The staff were friendly and attentive, though, which helped balance it out.

One small design issue that stood out: each table has a hanging light positioned directly in the middle, and it happened to be right at eye level with my partner. It made conversation slightly awkward, as we had to lean or shift to see each other properly. It seemed like it was specially low on our table (second light on the left as you walk in). Maybe it can be adjusted.

All in all, it was an enjoyable evening with excellent food and a very thoughtful team – just a few tweaks away from being a perfect dining experience."

"Warm welcome and friendly staff, but unfortunately lacking attentiveness
We were warmly welcomed, and the staff was friendly, yet unfortunately not very attentive. We had to wait an unusually long time for the champagne – and later again for the red wine. Throughout the evening, we often had to pour the drinks ourselves, even though it was clearly visible that our glasses were empty.

We also found it somewhat disturbing that one of the service staff was heavily ill with a cold and kept coughing. We truly felt sorry for her.

The food, however, was excellent from start to finish. We also greatly enjoyed the ambience.

It is regrettable that there was neither a smoking lounge nor a suitable sheltered outdoor area available. To enjoy a cigar, we had to go out to the street. At this price level, we expected more comfort in this regard."

The 62 best restaurants in Cape Town

Stellenbosch has just about wrested Franschhoek’s self-proclaimed “culinary capital” crown with an explosion of excellent restaurant openings, and Dusk – opened in 2022 – is somewhat of a vanguard, at least for fine dining pundits. A discreet 30-seater almost hidden in Stellenbosch’s historic heart, dimly lit other than the pool of light on each linen table focusing the eye on what you’re here for: delectable, edible art. The 13-course tasting menu changes but expect playful touches and well-balanced inventive pairings (tempura squash flower, Kalahari truffle agnolotti and West Coast lobster withParmesan and salted lemon and lemon-compressed tetra squash).

Chefs Callan Austin and Darren Badenhorst and sommelier Bafana Zondo provide an 11-course menu paired with interesting wines sourced from across the Western Cape. Combinations include Wildeberg The Tea Leaf – a blend of Chenin Blanc, Grenache Gris and Marsanne from old vineyards planted in 1977 – matched with a trio of amuse-bouches; the delicate floral parmesan rye tuiles showcasing technical skill. Mosi Wine Tinashe Chenin Blanc is made from 38-year-old bush vines by Joseph Dhafana, a Zimbabwean refugee who only tasted his first wine on his 29th birthday.
