What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
De Volkskombuis offers a charming dining experience in a historic Cape Dutch setting, praised for its friendly service and a blend of traditional and modern South African cuisine. While many enjoy the ambiance and specific dishes like steak and traditional pies, some found the menu limited or the food not entirely memorable.
"Great food in a very beautiful old Stellenbosch building. They serve classic boerekos as well as dishes that you find on most other restaurant menus around. The service could be a little more attentive but that certainly didn’t distract from having a great night out. Certainly worth a visit!"

"The experience was alright. Food was simple with a limited menu and not all that great. Everyone on our table packed their food away. I had the burger which was good, more basting and sauce would be lovely to balance out the heaviness of the meat. No mocktails, perhaps an opportunity? And really wanted the crispy loin chops I viewed on social media, maybe I’ll come back for that.
Excellent views and atmosphere."

"The setting was absolutely stunning, with a peaceful and inviting atmosphere that made it easy to settle in and enjoy the moment. The staff were friendly and welcoming, which added a nice personal touch to the experience.
I ordered the bobotie, and it was very good. The portion was just the right size, satisfying without being too heavy. The prices were also very reasonable, which made the meal feel like great value.
The food overall was enjoyable, though it did not completely sweep me off my feet. My friend tried the banana pizza out of curiosity. It was an interesting choice, but the flavor was just okay.
One of the highlights for me was the fireplace. It created such a cozy and comforting space, especially as the evening settled in. It gave the whole visit a warm and memorable feel."

If you’re after some traditional dishes, De Volkskombuis should be on the list – the kitchen of the people, serving up a wide selection of menu items from pizza, to steak, fish, and salads; but what we love are the traditional dishes such as Meraai se Hoenderpie (chicken pie), oxtail and Malay curry. If you are looking for something a little fancy or elevated but still comfortable and accessible, you have to dine at Rykaarts, and Genki (to die for Japanese Tapas and definitely the best sushi in town). For easy-going breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner, we have you covered too.
