The oldest buildings in the complex that today houses De Volkskombuis date back to 1902, when they were constructed as workers’ cottages on the farm Vredenburg.

De Volkskombuis Restaurant in Stellenbosch has re-opened in March 2018 after major renovations. They still specialise in traditional Cape cuisine and serve great quality steaks and lovely pizza’s, in an authentic Cape Dutch surrounding. Established in 1977, this restaurant became well known for their excellent cuisine with a comprehensive selection of fine wines from an award-winning wine list.

De Volkskombuis has returned to the Stellenbosch family after being closed for a span, and has again garnered a lot of attention for its hearty, homely food. The restaurant is quiet, with modern-meets-traditional décor and indoor and outdoor seating. There's a fireplace for those cold winter nights, giving De Volkskombuis an extra romance boost.

If you want to experience a piece of history while enjoying a meal, then De Volkskombuis is the restaurant for you. In 2017, the Rupert family restored this former historical home and turned it into the De Volkskombuis restaurant. So not only can you learn one or two historical facts, but you can get a top-class meal.

It is not surprising, therefore, that its most historic street/avenue, Dorp Street, has been declared a national monument. Dorp Street in Stellenbosch, the “City of Oaks”, represents one of the longest rows of old buildings and oak trees in any of the major towns in South Africa.
