What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
La Madeleine is consistently praised for its exceptional French and Belgian cuisine, with many diners calling it a 'hidden gem' and a fantastic culinary experience. The cozy atmosphere and attentive, friendly service, often highlighted by the chef's personal menu descriptions, create a truly memorable dining occasion. While most reviews are overwhelmingly positive, some mention initial skepticism due to the restaurant's unassuming exterior.
"Hidden Gem!!!
This restaurant was referred to us by a friend. When we got there, I was a bit sceptical because it doesn’t look like a typical restaurant from the outside. But once we were inside, we were met with awesome staff and a fantastic chef that told us what was on the menu. It truly was fantastic.
Food: We were a party of 3 and we mostly tried to order different dishes to taste everything, and I can honestly say that every option was amazing!! We have done a lot of fine dining before and love eating out, and normally there is at least one thing that is not nice. At La Madeleine EVERYTHING was amazing!!! And it really was very affordable and great value for money.
Service: The staff was also super! They were there at the right times, without us having to ask for them and also without them being annoying. They just knew when we needed them. Lovely, amazing and truly friendly people. I loved every second.
Cleanliness: The bathrooms were clean and smelled fresh. And YES, that matters!!
Honestly! Treat yourself! You won’t regret it!"

This is probably one of the best known restaurants in Pretoria and has been surprising visitors with it’s warm and relaxing atmosphere for many years. The true French Belgian tradition is reflected in the delectable dishes and the Chef-Patron, Daniel Leusch's passionate description of their speciality dishes like the Duck with exotic flavours or Springbok in red wine sauce with cranberries makes it well worth the visit. The eatery takes its name from the shell shaped Madeleine biscuit of which French writer Marcel Proust once wrote that it “invades the senses with exquisite pleasure.” The same is true of this restaurant.
8 comforting hot desserts in Pretoria
Anne Leusch, these days firmly ensconced as the chef at La Madeleine, says she is making a dessert that her parents used to make when the restaurant was still located in Sunnyside. The chocolate platter consists of a warm chocolate tartlet, white chocolate mousse, dark chocolate mousse and chocolate ice cream, all pulled together with an orange sauce. Good value for money is one of this restaurant’s trademarks and at R60 this is a bargain (especially considering they use Callebaut white chocolate and dark Belgian chocolate).
