What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Yatai Ramenbar is celebrated for its innovative take on Japanese street food, particularly its rich ramen broths and creative cocktails. Guests often praise the cozy, upscale ambiance and attentive service, with many calling it the best ramen they've ever had. However, some diners found the sharing menu confusing and the food overpriced, with one review strongly criticizing the ramen as salty and cold.
"We visited Yatai last week and were absolutely blown away, not only by the food itself but also by the incredibly creative presentation, the lovely atmosphere and our great waitress that helped us! Upon arrival , Yatai instantly felt like an authentic Japanese restaurant in the streets of Tokyo. Every plate we were served told a unique story with insane flavours. I would 100% recommend this gem to anyone."

"We booked at Yatai for Restaurant Week, that came with a special 6 course menu (however, the dishes were shared between the two of us, not what we expected). When we arrived, the hostess welcomed us nicely and took us right away to our table. Once seated, we quickly enjoyed the atmosphere. Low light, Asian atmosphere, big room and open kitchen.
During the whole dinner service was very efficient and friendly with dishes arriving promptly.
Food wise, beside the fact we had to share 4 dishes out of 6 (part of Restaurant Week), every single dish was pretty lovely, taste wise and visually. Duck dumplings were delectable, same as the wagyu meat balls. Funny enough, the ramen dish was average.
Atmosphere wise, the deco and ambiance were pleasing and special mention to the DJ creating a great party mood from 10pm.
Would I be back? Yes for an after dinner drinks vide or tapas style dinner."

"Had a very good experience at Yatai Restaurant. I chose to sit at the chef’s counter, which added a special touch — it’s a great way to watch the skill and precision that goes into each dish.
I opted for the set menu, which was well-balanced and beautifully presented. Each course offered something unique and flavourful. The sake was a perfect complement, enhancing the overall experience.
The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, making me feel right at home from the moment I arrived.
Highly recommended for anyone looking for a memorable dining experience with quality Japanese cuisine. If you can, sit at the counter — it’s worth it!"

The best spots for Ramen in Cape Town
Opening its doors in November 2024, Yatai Ramen provides an elevated Japanese street food dining experience. As no surprise, the star of the show on their menu is their wide selection of ramen. From miso grilled kinglip, served in a rich and creamy broth, with sea veg, fish cake, all within a steaming elderflower dashi broth and topped with marinated egg and chilli crisp oil, to miso dashi tofu.
The 10 Best Ramen Restaurants in Cape Town in 2024
Stepping off Bree Street into the dark and moody interiors, a riot of seductive cherry blossoms in the windows, with sizzling-hot beats and a buzz emanating from the open kitchen, it’s clear that Yatai (which opened in November 2024) is a must-visit hotspot. Immediately below sister restaurant Nikkei, it shares the same contemporary Japanese inspiration, but here chefs Rikku O’Donnchu and Warwick King put the spotlight on ramen, street food and a sparkle of sashimi. There’s a superb chef’s set menu that takes you through sashimi, gyoza, ramen, robata grill and more, or you can pop in to simply slurp a bowl of next-level ramen.
Cape Town’s 25 Best New Restaurants, Bars and Cafés 2024
Yatai Ramenbar, tucked below Nikkei on Bree Street, takes inspiration from Japan’s yatais – traditional food stalls that pop up on busy streets, serving simple, delicious dishes from ramen to skewers. Chefs Rikku O’Donnchu and Warwick King elevate this street food concept with rich, slow-cooked ramen broths, hand-pulled noodles and a menu that goes beyond the bowl, featuring yakitori, dumplings and small plates. Yatai brings a taste of Japan’s vibrant food culture right to Cape Town, keeping the cosy, lively vibe of a classic yatai with a modern, refined twist.

Just downstairs of the Japanese Peruvian fusion restaurant Nikkei, an intimate and sophisticated venue invites diners to explore Japanese street food turned into a true gastronomic experience. The seats at the open kitchen where diners can watch the chefs creating the most beautiful dishes may be a recall of the fast-disappearing yatai [Japanese street food stalls], and typical ramen bars. However, at Cape Town’s Yatai innovative cooking techniques, a trendy setting, and equally impressive menu has taken Japanese street food to the highest level.

With gorgeous contemporary interiors and a sophisticated yet casual vibe, Yatai Ramenbar is ideal for intimate dining occasions and date nights. This ramen hotspot is located below its sister restaurant, Nikkei Japanese Peruvian restaurant, which forms part of the Pan Collection Hospitality group.
