A comely neighbourhood restaurant in Krakovo, Pri Škofu has been quietly going about its business for years. Fabulous home-style cooking is the order of the day, most of which is prepared using hand-picked produce from the nearby allotments. Visitors choose from whatever’s chalked up on the board, which might be pork tenderloin in a fig sauce, or a black truffle risotto (€10), then take a seat inside the unadorned but snug interior, or outside on the sunny pavement terrace.

The funny thing is that when I was moving to Slovenia back in 2008 I spent one night in Ljubljana before driving further until Slovenske Konjice and on that night I ate in a nice little restaurant with a beautiful garden; back then I didn’t know Ljubljana at all and I found that tiny inn by chance while wandering around the town and so I didn’t have a clue about where it was located and even if I meant to go back to that inn for the following 6 years I was never able to find it again, but last Saturday -thanks to Elena- I was finally back at Pri Škofu!

Somewhat off the beaten track, on a modest back street in the quiet neighbourhood of Krakovo, this female-run restaurant is all about the warm welcome at the door and comforting, traditional flavours. That’s not to say it’s plain or humdrum – try for yourself the rich truffle gnocchi, or light and zesty fresh buckwheat with porcini and herbs. Then, for the full Slovenian experience, round off with a traditional cherry-and-cheese dumpling.

A real local favourite tucked away where the Bohemian suburbs of Krakovo and Trnovo meet. With a homely feel and outdoor seating, this little gem boasts real historical ambiance and Slovenian indigenous cuisine. There is no menu, but an array of daily specials often starting with a serving of venison pate or prosciutto, followed by mushroom soup and cuts of steaks and roasts.

This is a special destination for eating in Ljubljana at lunchtime. Pri Škofu (‘At the Bishop’s’) is a tiny restaurant located down a quiet street in Krakovo within the calm neighbourhood south of Ljubljana’s downtown. This restaurant is run by a women and serves some of the best cooked local dishes and salads in Ljubljana.

It’s one of our favorite Ljubljana restaurants from back in the day… and still is. The owners Maja and Robert live and breathe this family-run restaurant. Tucked away in Krakovo, a quieter part of Old Ljubljana, Pri Škofu serves fresh and tasty food at fair prices.

If you’re looking for more local than local food, head to Pri Škofu in Rečna ulica 8. In a simple, unpretentious setting, it offers hearty dishes made from ingredients grown in the neighborhood, as well as a selection of wines and beers from small local producers.
