What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Diners rave about the authentic Slovakian cuisine and the wide selection of excellent craft beers. The barbecue ribs and Bryndzové halušky are frequently highlighted as must-try dishes. While most praise the friendly and efficient service, some note that portion sizes can be small if side dishes are not ordered. The lively beer hall atmosphere is a significant draw, though it can get busy.
"Six stars if I could give it for this Slovakian beer hall with fabulous food that turned a quick lunch stop on our tour into the highlight of our day.
The barbecue ribs, served with hot chili sauce, garlic sour cream sauce and tasty cole slaw, fell off the bone. The friendly waitress, with excellent English, recommended the delicious kapustnica soup - sauerkraut, meat, sausage and sour cream. A generous side order of pickles included cucumber, sweet and hot pimentos and more.
Everything was deliciously flavorful - maybe except the Kofola, the national cola substitute that looks like Coke but is more herbal. It's very popular here and worth trying for the authentic experience, but an alternative choice might be the excellent local beer."

"Great experience at this place!! The food and beers were fabulous; the pork knuckle is a must!! It takes 1 hour to cook so be patient and order some ribs in the meantime… you won’t regret it 😉 The service was incredible; our server was very kind and knowledgeable; she helped us a lot with decision making. The place is very clean and everyone speaks English and can communicate easily. Totally recommend!!! ❤️"

Exploring Bratislava’s Booming Brewpub Scene
We also found a busy scene at Bratislava Meštiansky Pivovar, on nearby Drevena Street, which turned out to be our favorite Bratislava brewpub. Spread across three floors with a small outdoor seating area, it also served up a gastropub-inspired menu, albeit with more focus on traditional Slovakian dishes. A second, newer and even bigger branch of the same establishment, across town on Dunajska Street, serves a similar array of beers and food.
Bratislava: a beer lover's guide | Bratislava holidays
Just beyond the main shopping street, Obchodna, and down a side road is the surprisingly busy Meštiansky Pivovar (Drevená 8, mestianskypivovar.sk). Founded in 2010, this gargantuan, three-floored pub has tried to resurrect the magic of the long-since demolished original Bratislava brewery, which dated back to 1477. Combining modern brewing methods with old recipes, its Pilsner-esque lager comes in light and dark forms.
Things to do in Bratislava
Meštiansky Pivovar is located two minutes’ walk from the casino and features traditional slow-cooked Slovakian cuisine alongside a beer selection large enough to keep even Franke busy for a few days. The Flagship Restaurant is another must-see, housed as it is in a former monastery and now boasting grand interiors and its own in-house brewery, with legendary pies on the menu to help soak up the booze. Or for a finer diner experience you might like to try Great Bratislava, conveniently located right next to the casino and offering a convenient segue into a wild night as it converts into a club after 10pm.
A Day Out In Bratislava
I tend to find lunchtime the more opportune moment to visit brewery tap/brew pub venues, as you can entertain the thought you are engaging in a noble, almost academic pursuit of ‘tasting’, rather than simply starting along the way to getting pissed. There are several brewpub options in and around central Bratislava but for the quality (if not the selection or price) I recommend Meštiansky pivovar as a good place to start. Both their svetly and tmavy lezak (light and dark lager) are great examples of their styles.
Best Beer in Bratislava: TOP 13
Address: Drevená 8 & Dunajská 21, Bratislava Web: https://dunajska.mestianskypivovar.sk/. Bratislava Bourgeois brewery is one of the most important places on the Bratislava beer scene, where tradition meets modern brewing methods. Established in 2010, it operates on three floors and aims to attract visitors with its unique craft beers, particularly a special 12-degree lager that undergoes a fermentation process lasting 8 to 10 days, followed by four weeks of maturation.

Slovakian food in Bratislava: what to eat and where (2025 guide)
We finished our Bratislava food trip in style with a slap-up, all-singing, all-dancing feast in Meštiansky Pivovar. Aside from being the oldest brewery in Slovakia, it also serves fantastic authentic Slovak cuisine. The brewery has two restaurants in Bratislava; one slightly outside the Old Town on Drevená, and the other a little further out on Dunajská (still walkable distance from the Old Town).

Breweries in Bratislava Slovakia
Our first visit was Mestiansky Pivovar, a brewery and restaurant that has a sign on the front saying it has been around since the 1700s though my friend tells me the exact spot has only been open for five years. They serve delicious food and it is the only place my friend regularly eats outside the home. They have two lagers, a cloudy pale lager and a smoky dark lager.

A Bratislava Beer Tour
People come here from the UK and France all the time and drink and party and make fools,” the bartender at Meštiansky pivovar tells me. “We just step right over them on the sidewalk. You made your bed, now you sleep there, as they say.
