You’ll first see the red-earth-inspired exterior walls, and as you walk up the painstakingly decorated staircase (that is reminiscent of the mud architecture of Africa), you’ll emerge into a low-lit dining room with a cocktail bar that’s both glamorous and cosy. It feels like you’ve stepped into someone’s rather extravagant home with a dining area that can only seat around 20 guests.

Stumbling upon Tamba felt like being whisked away to the heart of Africa with each bite. The nyama choma (grilled meats) was perfectly seasoned, and the jollof rice was a flavourful, spicy surprise that I couldn’t get enough of. The real standout for me, though, was the bobotie, a South African spiced mince dish topped with a fluffy egg custard—a comforting blend of sweet and savoury.

The Lion City has been undeniably blessed by a gamut of cultural cuisines. It’s certainly not all-encompassing but already diverse in the spectrum. Naturally, certain styles still get lost within that flourish, criminally underrepresented and laden with potential — and it seems that African cuisine is one of the niches awaiting a breakthrough with the opening of the swanky new Tamba.
