In June 2012, the couple opened up a historic building that has belonged to Filipa’s family for over a century, transforming it into the ‘home away from home’ Wine Quay Bar where wine enthusiasts like themselves could come to experience the truly diverse range of wine Portugal has on offer. Here, The Culture Trip has a chat with Filipa to find out about their journey over the last few years, and what it is that makes their wine bar so unique.

Across the river in the heart of Porto, I found my way to Wine Quay Bar, a family-owned spot I discovered back in 2019 and couldn’t wait to return to, particularly for a glass of berry-forward baga wine from Portugal’s Bairrada wine region. At night on its terrace, building lights twinkle against the river. For meals, a recommendation from a resident required a 20-minute cab ride outside of Porto to the seaside town of Matosinhos.

This husband-and-wife-owned wine bar was started with the aim of showcasing the best of all of Portugal’s wines, not only those that Porto is known for. Sit on the terrace and enjoy the bustle of the Ribeira district while sipping wine from around Portugal and nibbling on cheeses, olives, and sardines. With prices starting at 2.25 Euro, it’s easy to sample multiple glasses, and the staff is extremely knowledgeable too.

With outside seating on a second level terrace overlooking the quayside which has the feeling t=you have front row seats to a beautiful view and a people-watching performance. Wine Quay Bar is a celebration of Portuguese wines, it's diversity and unique qualities. The petiscos or small plates here are served as compliments to the wine, enjoy delicacies such as cheeses, cured hams, choriço, breads, salads and olives.

Its very pricey for Portugal at 3 course $55 plus the $25 wine pairing per person, but the service and setting, request an outside table overlooking the river, are extraordinary – so is the food. For heartier fare head west along the Ribeira toward the sea to Trilhos Do Tomilho for an outdoor dinner of sea bass with lobster and watch the Viking cruise boats embark up the Douro River valley.

Wine Quay is probably the wine bar in Porto that I go to the most because it has an absolutely relaxing view over Cais de Gaia and the Douro river. Whenever I’m stressed, I go there for a glass of wine while I wave at the 6 bridge cruises that sail across the river. But to enjoy the view, you have to be lucky, as Wine Quay consists of half a dozen chairs along a narrow outdoor wall.

Wine Quay Bar is a sweet little gem, near the Douro river, with a spectacular view. This wine bar is the best place to start understanding what the Portuguese “petiscos” are and what the verb “petiscar” means for locals.There is nothing better than wine and nibbling some cheeses and chorizos, while you enjoy the best view of Porto!. Just sit there, order a glass of wine and enjoy!

Nestled 3 minutes from the famous São Bento train station lies a tiny tasting room owned by Sommelier Rafael de Lima. This isn’t a regular bar where you stroll in for a glass; no, Rafa has it set up as an entire wine experience. Once you book your party directly on his site or Airbnb Experiences, you’ll show up to a flight of Portuguese wine accompanied by local meats & cheeses.

This is one of the best restaurants in Porto, so you will not go wrong by going to enjoy a meal at the Wine Quay Bar. Enjoying a superb view over the quays, this address offers specialties from Porto that will delight gourmets. Think of getting to the restaurant earlier because Wine Quay Bar is a victim of its success and it is sometimes difficult to find a place.

Great view of the iconic river and bridge with outdoor and indoor seating. Great selection of wines by the glass and bottle. We ended up getting ~6 different wines by the glass (😂 I know, we were only going to get 2 each) and liked all of them!
