This pocket-sized tasco is a Porto institution and an eatery for the everyman, serving humble dishes that pay homage to deeply-rooted family traditions and simple farm-fresh ingredients. Far from the city’s touristic crowds, Tasquinha Zé Povinho is located on the first floor of owner Andrea Salomé’s house and features a menu of recipes that originated in small Portugese villages.

Tasquinha Zé Povinho is the quintessential hidden gem, away from the tourist crowds and ludicrously affordable. It’s nothing much to look at inside, and just has a couple of tables on the pavement outside, but the food we ate there hit the spot perfectly. Pork schnitzel with red beans and rice, and grilled tuna with potatoes and onions formed two options on the lunch menu that came with soup, bread and a drink.

This neighborhood tasca serves comfort food inspired by the owner’s heritage. The daily rotating menu features regional dishes like breaded pork with roasted potatoes, massa à lavrador (meaty stew with pasta and red beans), and caldo verde (potato-kale soup). With its casual furnishings and checkered tablecloths, this restaurant offers a cozy and authentic dining experience away from the tourist crowds.
