South of São Bento railway station (with its stunning azulejo tile panels), Cantina 32 (Rua das Flores 32, +351 222 039 069) is a friendly, attractive place with appealing options for vegetarians. A few doors downhill, Mercearia das Flores (Rua das Flores 110, +351 222 083 232) is a deli crammed with local products and wines whose kitchen produces very good brunches, salads and sandwiches.

Make reservations well in advance, as walk-ins often find themselves out of luck at this industrial-chic spot serving inventive renderings of local classics. Its signature dish is a whole grilled octopus easily big enough for two to share, but there are also delicious small sharing plates like quail egg croquettes and tuna tataki.

This laid-back restaurant is popular among young, trendy locals, with two sittings (one at 8pm, the other at 10pm to reflect the Mediterranean way of life) around large communal tables and smaller spots for two or four people. Start with fresh, warm bread and banana butter, before diving into large terracotta sharing dishes, including roast octopus with sweet potatoes. There are modern twists on classic Portuguese plates, too – try fresh pink tuna with pineapple, seafood and chorizo stew, and cheesecakes disguised as plant pots.

Set on buzzy-cool Rua das Flores in the middle of town, this popular, industrial-chic neo-bistro by chef-co-owner Luís Americo is where the city’s cool kids go for creative petiscos (tapas). Just about everything hits the mark here but the must-order is the pica-pau steak (dunkable chunks of chuck eye in a garlic-wine sauce). Or just swing by for lunch: its take on the Porto-style francesinha sandwich (basically, a crazy-good meat-cheese toastie) is pure joy.

Rua das Flores is known for being a hot spot in the Porto food scene, and we loved Cantina 32!. They have a small outdoor seating area in front of the restaurant, and the interior is very industrial-chic, with high ceilings, concrete walls, and lots of plants. Cantina 32 does inventive twists on traditional Portuguese staples, and a lot of their meats are served up in the cast iron pan they were cooked in.

A space that is both stylish and comfortable, with original vintage details and concrete walls. Much like the different accessories that adorn the space, the menu is a mix-match of tapas and tidbits. There are Portuguese classics like bacalhau à brás or pica-pau (bite-sized pieces of steak), and tasty deserts that are also perfect for sharing.

Situated in the bustling Rua das Flores, Cantina 32 combines a quirky, rustic decor with a creative menu that keeps patrons coming back. The restaurant serves up a fusion of traditional Portuguese dishes with a modern twist, making it a hit among locals and tourists alike. In fact, we stopped by to make a reservation and found out they were completely booked up for the next 4 days. I was totally bummed!. BUT we were able to snag a last-minute reservation.

We tried a delicious version of the Porto food Bacalhau A Bras in Cantina 32 restaurant. Other recommended spots in town include Abadia do Porto and Caldeireiros.

You’ll definitely want to come hungry because there are SO many delicious dishes to try…or just go back over and over again!
