Lisbon has some knock-out old buildings, but when it comes to dining in them few wow like Palacio Chiado. Set in an 18th-century palace, once home to balls and parties, it comes with a dash of throwback extravagance that’s still visible in its plates of oysters, lobster taquitos and confit duck legs. Saying that, it’s surprisingly affordable, so if you watch what you order you should leave with enough change to grab a nightcap at the on-site bar.

An art-filled room on the noble floor of an 18th-century palace has long been a lavish setting for enjoying fresh oysters—served au naturale at the gorgeous Palácio Chiado. In 2021, the bivalves also made their way downstairs, when the ground-floor bar got a trendy makeover, complete with bright, poppy colors, resident DJs, craft cocktails, and a bar food menu that includes snacks like lobster taquitos and burrata wit pesto, as well as the same oysters you’d find upstairs. Originally built as a mansion for a nobleman, the premises was greatly expanded in the early 19th century over the ruins of the royal property, which had been destroyed in a fire. Known as Palacio Quintela, it was in this building that General Junot established his headquarters after French troops occupied Lisbon in 1807. Over the next century the palace served as home to several Portuguese members of high society, and later a number of cultural entities.

That evening, I met a colleague at the Palácio Chiado, a stunningly restored eighteenth-century palace, which served as a residence, library, museum, and Institute of Decorative Arts before falling into disrepair. Palacio Chiado is a fancier Timeout style food market, it’s smaller but much plusher and has swift table service. The outside menu didn’t appear to show much in the way of gluten free food, but the building was so intriguing I decided to go in for a drink anyway. To my surprise, there was actually a kitchen devoted which had a selection of GF/DF foods.

There’s only one place to go in Lisbon when you want to dress to the nines for a night out on the town where you can see and be seen. Palácio Chiado is that place, where you can eat, drink, party and look fabulous in an opulent palace. When they say Palácio, they actually mean you get to dine in a real palace.

Last but certainly not least, you have the opportunity to dine in an 18th century palace when in Lisbon!. Built in 1781, Palácio Chiado is both extravagant and elegant, and probably one of the more unique places you can dine in Europe. There’s something special about dining in such an historic setting.

Like the other Martinhal hotels, the Martinhal Chiado offers a Kid’s Club for children ages six months and up. There are regularly programmed themed activities for ages 2-5 and 6-9 on a daily basis. (Depending on the season and age of child, these services my require a reservation and/or a fee.)

The Palácio Chiado might just be the most opulent place in Lisbon. Its palatial rooms and giant 18th-century murals are already impressive, though the interior decorators took things up another notch — for instance, by hanging a big golden lion with wings from the ceiling.

Constructed in the mid-1780s, Palácio Chiado was once where aristocrats danced the nights away. Now, open to all, an evening here is truly unforgettable. All of the palace’s original features have been restored, from the stained glass windows to the ceilings and paintings.

Also in the Chiado neighborhood, the Corpo Santo Lisbon sits just a few blocks from the Tagus River near the ferry terminals, close to landmarks like the Arco de Trifunal and Palácio Chiado, as well as tourist attractions like the Puppet Museum and the Museo do Chiado.

To impressive friends who come to visit, my go-to Portuguese places in Lisbon are Ramiro - authentic seafood, Palacio Chiado - restaurant in a beautiful palace in the city center, and Taberna da Rua das Flores - a cozy and casual Portuguese tapas place.

Palacio Chiado – This palace (yes, palace… go read their history) turned restaurant has seven different dining concepts. There is something for everyone. I was able to safely eat a risotto that was delicious.
