Reviews Summary

Arkhe offers a sublime and innovative vegetarian fine dining experience, with exceptional dishes and attentive service that delight both vegetarians and omnivores. While some find the bread and cheese optional, the tasting menus are consistently praised for their creative flavors, textures, and beautiful presentation, making it a highly recommended destination in Lisbon.

"The team welcomed me for my birthday, they made me feel special and welcome, and I even got to blow out a candle to mark the occasion! The food was also excellent, very bright and the tastes of spring were incredibly refreshing! I left very satisfied and completely full! I will definitely visit again upon my next trip to Lisbon!!"

Shelby Caughman

"I was lucky enough to get a spot at the last minute through the waitlist, it is an intimate place so a reservation is a must. Delicious food and high quality produce. It is hard to compose a 7 course vegetarian menu at Michelin star quality but this place does it and it is relatively affordable. The music was a bit funky for my taste but it is a matter of preference and others might actually like it. The dining room is tastefully designed and the staff are knowledgeable about the dishes and attentive. High recommendation, keep on the good work"

Ioanna Angelidou

"Some dishes were totally memorable and refreshing. All dishes were well balanced. Some were a feast of textures. It is one of the rare fine dining restaurants that I have visited and I have thought I'll revisit if I ever get the chance. I think the only weak points were the bread and the cheese platter, for my taste. They were quality products but they were not that great, relative to the other dishes. The bread was something I can easily make (One of my evaluation criteria is always whether I can make a similar food or not). Cheese platters have never been my favorites. This one wasn't an exception neither. It had some nice elements but I think they should always be optional at an additional cost."

8 Best Vegetarian Restaurants in Lisbon

Arkhe is a Greek word meaning ‘beginning’ or ‘origin’, but this restaurant has come a long way from where it began. Now in a new location, the vegetarian restaurant by João Ricardo Alves and Alejandro Chávarro has all the space it needs to reach its potential. It’s larger, more comfortable, and offers better conditions for customers and staff, all while staying true to its founding principle: proving that fine dining doesn’t need to serve meat or fish to shine.

The 30 best restaurants in Lisbon to try in 2025

In truth, it feels a shame to introduce Arkhe as a vegetarian restaurant. The tasting menu is so varied here that if you weren’t to know beforehand, you’d probably reach the desserts before realising that you hadn’t eaten a morsel of meat or fish. But, given that Portuguese cuisine sways heavily towards carnivorous dishes, after a few days of (delicious) local meals, it can feel like a breath of fresh air to leave a restaurant without the heavy feeling that can come from overindulging in meat.

Lisbon for Vegetable Lovers: 8 Vegetarian-ish Fine-Dining Restaurants

The newest restaurant on this list, as well as the only one that’s entirely plant-based, Arkhe is chef João Ricardo Alves’s love letter to haute-veg cuisine. Six years of that, and he set off for Asia to broaden his influences and technique.

The 6 Best Vegetarian Restaurants In Lisbon

Príncipe Real is home to one of the best eateries with vegetarian options in Lisbon, arkhe, which also happens to be a Michelin-starred spot. If you’re looking for a meat-free fine dining experience or one with gluten-free options, I don’t think it gets much better than this. Despite its highly-regarded food, the restaurant was surprisingly laidback with bright white walls, old wooden panels, and stone features.
