What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Barreirinha Bar Café is celebrated for its stunning seaside location and vibrant atmosphere, especially at sunset. While many praise the creative cocktails, homemade Poncha, and lively music, some reviews suggest the food and service can be inconsistent. It's a popular spot for drinks and enjoying the view, with a relaxed vibe that draws both locals and tourists.
"Loved this bar at the outskirts of Funchal old town - perfect view over the seaside, delicious prego sandwich and a great choice of really good drinks (especially the sangria rosé). Try the batata frita as a side with your mains - so good! If there’s a queue grab a drink and soak in the view from atop the wall, a table will free up soon enough."

"Been there multiple times and I liked: nice view, tasty drinks, good prices.
I have some mixed feelings about food and staff. We had friendly staff and also ones with little effort. I can’t really recommend Burritos/Burger as they don’t taste like anything special. Toast looked pretty good there but I haven’t tried it myself.
Overall it’s a nice place for aperetif!"

"Lovely seaside bar with drinks and bar food. Hip young and friendly staff. Order a strong but delicious poncha rum drink and enjoy the atmosphere, looking at the ocean from above. Have a good burger. Right now there is a jazz band playing. You couldn’t do better for a vacation vibe. No reservations but we got a table quite quickly."

Restaurants in Madeira
A café by day and bar by night, Barreirinha is popular with the locals no matter what time of day you visit. This is partly thanks to its menu of easy-to-eat items like burgers, sandwiches, burritos, and salads, and partly due to its location on a hillside with small outside tables on the terrace overlooking the ocean; huge white parasols shade you from the Madeiran sun while local musicians keep the atmosphere lively.
The best bars and nightlife in Madeira
The vibe at Barreirinha changes depending on when and what time you’re here. Some come for a post-swim lemonade emerging from the bathing complex below. Others head here for sunset.

eating out in funchal, madeira
EATING OUT IN FUNCHAL AT BARREIRINHA. Situated just 4km outside of Funchal town centre, this holiday rental is perfectly located for eating out, shopping, and sight seeing. Floating in the Atlantic, more than 600 miles from mainland Portugal, you'll find the verdant, vertiginous and volcanic island of Madeira, and its flower-filled capital, Funchal. Look at a junior suite that has a more the adequate kitchenette for making snacks and eating takeaways.
Nightlife in Funchal
The Barreirinha Bar and Café is set in a chilled out seaside location near the Santa Maria Maior Church in Funchal. A perfect location to relax, read or even watch incoming cruise ships docking or exiting the Funchal harbour. Barreirinha is very small in size but makes up for this by offering a large roadside esplanade with lots of tables and chairs to sit many daytime or evening guests...
Where to eat and drink in Madeira
This hip burger and cocktail bar has a huge seafront terrace that’s the perfect spot to catch the sunset over the ocean. Young Madeiran owners Claudia and Fabio do more than just run a bar. Musicians themselves, they’re also organising cool and creative events and mini festivals across the island, bringing a bit of what’s missing to remote Madeira.
The best bars in Funchal and Madeira
Barreirinha Bar Cafe is an outdoor drinking spot with a brilliant atmosphere. It’s 100% the best place for a caipirinha or a mojito before heading over to a nearby restaurant to eat (more on that in my post about where to eat in Madeira… shameless plug!). It happens to have the best location ever due to its amazing ocean views.
