Perched on a cliff overlooking the ocean – close to the famous Boca do Inferno (Mouth of Hell) sea arch – Mar Do Inferno scores top marks when it comes to location. The food offering is as appetising as the views, with an abundance of seafood to choose from, a live lobster tank and an iced display counter. If you can’t make up your mind, the special seafood platter – staked with lobster, grilled tiger prawns and mussels – allows you to sample some of the best bits.

This is a favourite with many locals, including chef José Avillez, and for many reasons, including the friendly host, the quality and freshness of the fish and seafood and its location facing the sea. A trip to “Lourdes”, as this family-run restaurant is known, is a must, whether it’s to try some bruxas (the local seafood stew) or to taste one of the house’s fish specialties.

First up on Where To Eat in Cascais is one of my all-time favorite restaurants in town, Mar Do Inferno. Perched atop the cliffs of Boca Do Inferno (Mouth Of Hell – a lot of fishermen have perished in the rough swells and waves), this seafood and fish spot boasts unobstructed views of the Atlantic Ocean and, on a clear day, even the south coast of Lisbon. Watch the sailboats float by from the terrace over a lunch of delicious seafood including clams (Ameijoas à Bulhão Pato), crab (Sapateira or Santola), oysters (Ostras) and goose barnacles (Percêbes) which are my forever obsession – try them, you can’t find them in many parts of the world but get only a handful since they’re pricey because of how dangerous it is to pry them from their violent and rocky sea homes.

If you don’t mind a slightly pricey place for good food/service, there is Hifen for good Portuguese tapas with a view, Mar do Inferno for excellent seafood with a view (but slightly outside the town), Visconde da Luz for good Portuguese food of all kinds (right in town), and lots of others like that – generally in the 100+ per couple (with wine) range. Remember you don’t need to add 30% for tax and tip here – 5-10% is plenty. There are also some decent places on the waterfront towards Estoril, but with touristy prices (but what a view with your meal!).

Given its seaside location and time-honoured fishing tradition, it goes without saying that Cascais is home to some of the best seafood restaurants in Portugal. “One of my top choices is Furnas do Guincho,” says Rita. “The perfect outdoor lunch spot, located right on top of the ocean rocks.” (Try the lobster crêpes, with a beguiling sea view.) A more traditional choice, Mar do Inferno is also a sure bet for an excellent meal, while local spot Tasca Viriato is as authentic as Portugese cuisine comes.

Work up an appetite with a walk to Boca do Inferno, a striking formation of cliffs also known as Hell’s Mouth, where you’ll find Mar do Inferno tucked inside the small bay. Book ahead, and ask for a window seat to get the best views of the rocky coast and crashing waves. Given the location, it’s little surprise that seafood is the focus here, with brill, red mullet and snapper coming simply grilled, and huge platters loaded with juicy tiger prawns and clams also available.

Rent a bicycle or a scooter to explore the famous Praia do Guincho, which lies nine kilometres northwest of Cascais, and is rumoured to be the best beach near Lisbon. Powerful waves and strong undercurrents means the water is dangerous for swimmers, but surfers and windsurfers will be in their element: both world championships have been hosted here in the past, and novices are invited to take lessons with Moana Surf School based on Guincho Beach.

For nearly half a century, this family-run institution has commanded a dramatic perch on the cliffs of Boca do Inferno. It remains the definitive destination for classic Portuguese seafood in its purest form: magnificent shellfish platters piled high and the day’s catch grilled to simple perfection. The cooking is an exercise in confidence, trusting the quality of the ingredients to speak for themselves.

Run for more than three decades by Maria de Lourdes Tirano and her two sons, Mar do Inferno is located right next to Boca do Inferno and has a stunning sea view. Our advice: book a table by the window to enjoy the view. As for dishes, from the carabineiros prawns to the perceves (goose barnacles) from Roca or the boiled spider crab of Cascais, there's plenty to choose from when it comes to seafood.
