We passed stores full of ecclesiastical paraphernalia and artisan chocolate and paused for coffee at the art deco Café A Brasileira, where locals, tourists and political activists have gathered since 1907. We also browsed stalls full of fruit, veg and bacalhau – dried and salted cod – inside the Mercado Municipal. The market, originally built in the 1950s, was renovated in 2020; now, a modern roof of sweeping timber and glass covers both the fresh produce and a new plastic-free food court where you can buy suckling-pig sandwiches and frigideiras – Braga’s traditional round, minced veal-filled pastries.

As we moved on from the Praça da Republica Square our destination for a well-earned coffee and cake stop was the iconic Café A Brasileira, housed in a beautiful blue-tile fronted building with ornate metalwork and signage. Inside is just as gorgeous – sets of tiny tables and chairs receive plenty of light from the floor to ceiling windows, and a counter full of temptation shows off lots of delicious pastries.

If you don't fancy elbow-barging your way to an espresso in the morning, stroll past the crowds at the historic café A Brasileira and find a caffeine fix at bookshop and coffee house Centésima Página instead. A Brasileira in Lisbon is one of the oldest cafés of the Portuguese capital.
