Reviews Summary

Prasowy is highly praised for its authentic and exceptionally affordable Polish cuisine, with many reviewers highlighting the historic 'Milk Bar' atmosphere and efficient self-service system. While most diners enjoy the wide variety and great value, some find the service can be less welcoming, and certain dishes like fried pierogies may be overcooked.

"The food won’t get cheaper and more delicious than this. Visited other milk bars in Warsaw, this was probably the most authentic one. (The spinach salad with cooked beetroot, feta cheese and raspberry dressing was unexpectedly my fave.)"

The 10 Best Polish Restaurants In Warsaw

Another superb local venue with a historic feel about it is the Bar Mleczny Prasowy, which dates back to 1954 and has been serving up cheap and tasty Polish food ever since. Bar Mleczny Prasowy is located on the main Marszałkowska street in a grey building and serves up a delightful range of pierogi in a very typical ‘ Milk Bar‘ atmosphere. Inside features a bigger interior than most Milk Bars as Bar Mleczny Prasowy needs to satisfy hordes of customers on weekdays, particularly during the 12-2 pm peak time.

Milk Bars: Warsaw's Proletarian Food Culture

Bar Prasowy on Marszałkowska 10 is easily my favorite milk bar in Warsaw. Although it has been in business for over 60 years, it has been renovated, modernized and uses Ikea furniture and dishware. The locale hosts events and lectures occasionally on weekends and I have even personally witnessed a Travel Channel film crew interview workers for a program on “best international eats.” Unlike some milk bars, the flour based dishes are handmade to order (you can see the cooks kneading the dough and making the food) – so there is usually about a 10 minute wait for pierogi or naleśniki.

Open since 1954, this local fave still serves tasty and cheap Polish food. Milk Bars were a governmental program during the Soviet times to create cafeterias offering local meals at the lowest prices. Praswoy has a typical and simple interior providing various dumplings, plus a nice variety of kotlet schabowy (Polish version of Wiener Schnitzel), bigos (meat stew with sauerkraut and shredded fresh cabbage), placki ziemniaczane (potato pancakes), naleśniki (crepes), and others.

Milk bars became popular following WWII as a place to go for cheap meals. There are still a lot of traditional milk bars in Warsaw in operation, but they can be difficult to locate and order from if you don’t speak the language. However, we came across Bar Mleczny Prasowy which is a modern milk bar that uses self-service machines for orders, and the screen can be set to several different languages.

10 affordable restaurants to eat in Warsaw

Our guide recommended Bar Prasowy, another excellent milk bar close to our hotel. Known for its affordability, the menu typically costs around 4€, but if you want to try several dishes, you can still enjoy a hearty meal for under 12€. We ordered goulash, breaded pork chop with mashed potatoes, pierogi, dessert, and three drinks—all for just 49zl.

Bar Mleczny Prasowy (Marszakowska 10/16; tel. 22/628-44-27) is particularly quaint and the place to go if you have time to visit only one. The coffee is awful, but where else can you get scrambled eggs for 3.50 z at 7am on a weekday?. Go soon; these old diner-like digs are dwindling fast in a gentrifying city.
