Reviews Summary

Pod Wawelem Kompania Kuflowa is celebrated for its generous portions of traditional Polish cuisine and lively, atmospheric beer hall setting. Diners frequently praise dishes like pork knuckle, pierogi, and schnitzel, though some find the portions surprisingly small for the price or mention cold fries as a minor issue. The restaurant's prime location near Wawel Castle and its family-friendly amenities add to its appeal, despite occasional remarks about loud noise or inconsistent service.

"Met some friends for dinner. Perfect blend of atmosphere & good food. I recommend the ribs with honey sauce. The apple strudel hit the spot for dessert. Apparently the cheesecake is good too. Live traditional Polish accordion music provides vibes."

Marek Tkaczuk

"If you love Schnitzel then go here 😋 had with cucumber salad and fries. (In hindsight should have got mushroom sauce instead but still very nice). Great value for money 🎉

The restaurant is opposite Wawelem Castle, didn’t book a table, it was packed at 8.30 but only had to wait 20 minutes to be seated.

Great service, food is high quality.

Wanted chicken skewers but sold out, so was the pork so go earlier if you want either."

Carrie Burnett

"We walked in to Pod Wawelem around 1:30 in the afternoon and managed to get a table for four in the tram part of the restaurant.
The beer offer was great and service was excellent.
The schnitzel was great, as was the lamb sausage. It’s a shame all the fries were cold, which took the shine off our meal."

Christopher Lewis

The 10 Best Restaurants In Krakow, Poland

Located halfway between the Main Square and Kazimierz, Pod Wawelem-Kompania Kuflow cooks up generous portions at reasonable prices, while offering a step back in time. The experience of dining during the Austro-Hungarian Empire is recreated through the décor and smaller details such as the waitresses’ uniforms and the original one-liter beer steins. The restaurant features Under the Wawel, a chopped steak with herb butter and fries, which can be enjoyed while admiring the sights of the Wawel Castle.Św.

20 Best Krakow Restaurants (Updated 2024)

At the foot of Wawel Castle (well, technically across the street, but who’s checking?), is Pod Wawelem Kompania Kuflowa, who specialise in humongous portions of Galician cuisine (Galicia was an area of Eastern Poland and Western Ukraine, not to be confused with the Spanish Galicia!). They are famous for their pork knuckle, and the thing to do here is order a tonne of different meats (either choosing from the menu yourself or opting for one of their sharing platters), along with beets, horseradish, and sauerkraut. We went for the ‘Officer’s Platter,’ which was only 11 EUR and impossible to finish!

Electric Blue Food - Kitchen stories from abroad

Where to eat Polish food in Krakow • Electric Blue Food

If you have a medium budget and want to experience Polish eating in a fun environment and with a bit of a folkloristic feel, I cannot recommend enough the restaurants of the “Kompania Kuflowa” group: Pod Wawelem (ul. Świętej Gertrudy 26-29) and Restauracja Sukiennice (Rynek Główny 3). Don’t let the location of either drive you into thinking that these restaurants are tourist traps. While well-equipped to cater for tourists, both have an excellent reputation also among locals.

Traditional dishes – Kraków Heritage

In the 19th century, Krakow was part of the multicultural empire of the Austrian Habsburgs, and Vienna became the main centre from which new trends reached Wawel. It was inspired by Viennese café culture that gave rise to the first Noworolski Café in the Sukiennice, which still exists today. Its customers were particularly fond of the Viennese apple strudel and, later, the simple chocolate cake created by Austrian confectioner Oskar Pischinger in the 1980s.
