At the foot of Wawel Castle (well, technically across the street, but who’s checking?), is Pod Wawelem Kompania Kuflowa, who specialise in humongous portions of Galician cuisine (Galicia was an area of Eastern Poland and Western Ukraine, not to be confused with the Spanish Galicia!). They are famous for their pork knuckle, and the thing to do here is order a tonne of different meats (either choosing from the menu yourself or opting for one of their sharing platters), along with beets, horseradish, and sauerkraut. We went for the ‘Officer’s Platter,’ which was only 11 EUR and impossible to finish!

If you have a medium budget and want to experience Polish eating in a fun environment and with a bit of a folkloristic feel, I cannot recommend enough the restaurants of the “Kompania Kuflowa” group: Pod Wawelem (ul. Świętej Gertrudy 26-29) and Restauracja Sukiennice (Rynek Główny 3). Don’t let the location of either drive you into thinking that these restaurants are tourist traps. While well-equipped to cater for tourists, both have an excellent reputation also among locals.

It was so good that it landed on bishops’ tables and at the royal Wawel. The name of 'Chleb Prądnikki' appears for the first time in a document from 1421. The bishop of Kraków, Albert, gave his cook Skowronek some land in Prądnik, obliging him to deliver rye bread to the bishop's table.

This is an old fashioned restaurant with amazing Polish food. The portions are very big and you also get some pickles and cabbage for free before your meal. I liked their food so much I visited twice and both times the dishes were delightful.

Of course, we weren’t going to tour through Poland without having authentic Polish cuisine. This included pickles, cabbage, and, of course, pierogies. Basically what Eric grew up eating!

As much an event as a restaurant, Pod Wawelem has eye-popping portions of meat, to be washed down with litres of beer, and should be experienced at least once.

This place is especially for those who like to eat, because the portions are really huge!. Have you ever eaten a pork-sized pizza?. Or a half-meter skewer?
