Polish fare is, obviously, everywhere, but there seem to be two main types of Polish restaurant - the cheap-as-chips milk bar (‘bar mleczny’) that cater primarily to locals, and the tourist-trap theme restaurants that offer pretty much the same food (and same mediocre quality), but simply embellished by waiting staff in traditional costumes, possibly some thigh-slapping folk music, floor-to-ceiling fake wooden beams, and strewn about with various other folkloric dust-collecting knick knacks (I will spare you the details). However, if you want to actually sample and enjoy proper Polish food, cooked to a high standard, Pod Baranem is probably your best option in Krakow. It is not cheap, but you can find pretty much the best examples of traditional Polish cuisine, such as Żurek (sour rye) soup, Kotlet schabowy (breaded pork chop) and Bigos (meat and cabbage stew) - all delicious, freshly-made and served to you on tables with freshly-starched linen.

Pod Baranem 00 48 12 429 4022, podbaranem.com serves century-old recipes in a fine, cosy setting, at the south-east corner of Planty Park. It boasts the best pierogi (dumpling-like parcels) in the city, hand-sized goblaki (stuffed cabbage leaves) and daily specials ranging from Krakow- style herring to pig’s trotters. Bringing the classics right up to date is Pod Nosem 00 48 12 376 0014, podnosem.com – a restaurant at Kanonicza 22 hotel with tables set out on the street, opposite the former home of Pope John Paul II. It does fine dining in the modern European sense: Venison tartare, nettle soup, goose gizzards and szarlotka (apple pie) are highlights.

Restauracja Pod Baranem, located on 21 Gertrudy Street, a short walk from Wawel Castle, has a longstanding history of being one of the best restaurants in Krakow offering scrumptious traditional Polish cuisine with a European twist. The restaurant is spread over five beautiful rooms decorated with striking modern Polish art as well as colourful traditional Polish interiors which makes for a characterful and cosy setting to dine in. Restauracja Pod Baranem champions fresh Polish produce, creating a menu packed with Polish classics with a wide choice of gluten free options and vegetarian dishes.

In between the Main Square and Jewish quarter, Pod Baranem is an absolute gluten-free must if in Krakow. We came here for lunch on Ross’s actual birthday but it is definitely dinner worthy, especially with their super cheap but yummy wine, and gluten free beer!. Pod’s super traditional menu is 90% gluten free, and they cook everything fresh so are able to adapt lots of the dishes to suit other dietary requirements, so I had no trouble finding something garlic and onion free too.

Pod Baranem was the first restaurant we tried during out visit, as it was close to our Air BnB and had the most extensive menu of traditionally Polish gluten free and non-gluten free food. It’s a large restaurant, with charming rustic décor and the service was great. We visited twice during our stay and didn’t need to book, but this was during the week – at the weekend it might be worth making a reservation.

On the southern fringes of the Old Town, close to the hilltop Wawel Castle complex which dates to the mid- 11th Century but was rebuilt in Renaissance times, is homely, family-run Pod Baranem. Here, locals gather below wooden beams and lanterns to devour Polish food that makes the most of seasonal produce; try the roast venison with porcini mushrooms and moist piernik (gingerbread) served with cherry vodka.

Pod Baranem, or 'under the ram', open since 1997 and situated just a couple of hundred metres from Wawel Castle opposite the Planty gardens is fine example of proper Polish cuisine. Inside, Pod Baranem has five air-conditioned rooms that can seat up to around 100 people. Antique furniture and linen tablecloths give a late 19th century bourgeois feel offset by plenty of natural light and touches...

Just 200 meters from the must-visit Wawel Castle is one of the best Polish gluten-free restaurants in Kraków, Pod Baranem. On our first night in Kraków we came here as we heard they had gluten-free pierogi as well as other gluten-free dishes. To our surprise they had over five pages in their menu dedicated to just gluten-free dishes, not to mention they are certified by the Polish Celiac Society.

At the Pod Baranem restaurant, you can enjoy soups, fish, meats (including venison), the iconic maczanka po krakowsku, and roast goose. Here you will meet refined waiters who will serve you with attention and respect.The restaurant is full of antiques and photographs depicting important guests who have dined here over the years. The artwork by Polish artist Edward Dwurnik is also on display.

Pod Baranem was our first dining experience on arrival in Kraków, and it definitely set the barrier high. A homely, chic but unpretentious trattoria-style venue, the walls are lined with modern artworks that give a contemporary spin to the otherwise rustic space. The menu is traditional, with highlights including wild boar, venison and duck.

Our last tip on the list is Pod Baranem, also a restaurant recommended by the Michelin Guide. At this family-owned and very popular restaurant, Polish food of all kinds is served. We had also booked this restaurant in advance, which was lucky for the guests who tried to make a drop-in had to turn around at the door or come back after 21 pm.

The „Pod Baranem” restaurant is located in Krakow at 21 Swietej Gertrudy street. It was established in 1997 by an experienced cook named Jan Baran. Since it was first opened, it worked out an excellent opinion among its countless customers, many of which became its regular guests.

I've been to Krakow MANY times, but not in the last 6 or 7 years. I echo Aqua e Vino, not only very good food but a cozy atmosphere as the restaurant is underground in a sort of "cave". For traditional Polish Pod Aniolamy (Under the Angels) is excellent, but will be a bit pricey.
