After the Fall of Saigon in the late 1900s, many Vietnamese fled the country in pursuit of peace and freedom. Thousands of refugees ended up in the Philippines, many of whom rebuilt their lives in Puerto Princesa. With the help of the local government and the Center for Assistance to Displaced Persons (CADP) of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines, the refugees built Viet Ville, an entire community, from the ground up.

One of Puerto’s most compelling curiosities is Viet Ville (Brgy. Sta Lourdes; +63 920 220 8694), a ramshackle micro community conceived in 1996 by the Catholic Church’s Center for Assistance to Displaced Persons to rehouse “boat people” living in refugee camps (one was at the building now housing the Special Battalion Museum). Though it’s now largely a ghost town — many original inhabitants have returned home, or resettled elsewhere in Puerto — five households remain, some with young children; and since the souvenir shop has fallen into disrepair, the restaurant, strewn with Vietnamese conical hats, fans, drums and guitars, has become the village’s lifeblood.

Only 5.2 kilometers from Honda Bay, they offer both Filipino and Asian cuisines, the top seller though are their moon cakes (hopias) and raisin bread.

The Vietnamese cuisine in Viet Ville Restaurant is as authentic as it gets — and even comes with history lessons on the side. Located in a village that used to be home to refugees of the Vietnam War, this establishment is a former joint cooperative between Vietnamese immigrants and Palawan locals. Though the rest of the village is now somewhat a ghost town, many tourists flock to this decades-old eatery for its mouthwatering banh mi, spring rolls, and pho.

If you want to have a taste of Vietnam while in Palawan, then Viet Ville is worth a visit. From their famous pho to their crispy spring rolls, every dish at Viet Ville is made with fresh ingredients and bursting with flavor. The location of the restaurant used to be the home of thousands of Vietnamese refugees who sought asylum in the Philippines.

On the way we stopped at Viet Ville for lunch which is probably the best Vietnamese restaurant in Palawan. It’s located at the old Vietnamese village on the right of the main highway about a kilometre north of the turnoff to the Honda Bay wharf. The village was founded in 1995 when about 2,000 refugees from Vietnam were resettled in Palawan.

Only until my second trip to Palawan I learned that back in 1970's, a part of Puerto Princesa became home to many Vietnamese refugees who were fleeing away from Vietnam war. Called as Viet Ville, today this place is already empty. These days only a few of them lives there whom are mostly elders and those who married locals of Palawan.

There’s a plethora of noodle houses or “chaolongans” in Puerto Princesa that you can choose from if you want to eat the Vietnamese beef stew.Some of the highly recommended places to try chao long and other Vietnamese dishes are Viet Ville Restaurant, Rene’s Saigon Vietnamese Specialties and Bona’s Chaolong.

En route to the hotel, we stop by Viet Ville, a vestige of the former Vietnamese refugee camp that has become a popular restaurant. The nipa hut-style restaurant is said to offer the crustiest baguette in town, the famous noodles and baguette sandwiches.

If you are looking for a really good, authentic Vietnamese noodles at a cheap price, Viet Ville is the place to be. Chaolong is really popular not only for the locals but also for the tourist and you must try this once you visit the resto.

It about 15km from the center of Puerto Princesa, on the highway to the north. The food is authentic Vietnamese and has been consistently good over the years that I have been going there. I always enjoy the beef stew soup.

If you’re looking for Vietnamese craftmanships, then Viet Ville is where you should go to, or for wider selections, New City Commercial Center Mall for souvenirs. This mall actually looked more like a huge supermarkets.

Viet-Ville, as it is more commonly known, housed shelters, a noodle factory, a couple of French bread bakeries, as well as Catholic and Protestant churches, and a Buddhist temple.

Many of them found solace and home in Puerto Princesa, eventually forming Viet Ville, which once housed nearly 2,000 Vietnamese refugees, who found livelihood by serving food.

It is not far from the city center and serves authentic and delicious chao long. The dish comes with French bread and other ingredients to give it flavor.
