The bohemian boutique-filled neighborhood of Barranco is 20 minutes on foot, or about 7 in a cheap Uber; and other must-visits, like the Mercado Surquillo (where many a food tour, like those from Urban Kitchen which guide you through fascinating fruits, tubers, and even Amazonian grub), are easily within reach.

The larger No.1 Mercado holds food stalls among its array of goods. Seafood is highly prepared for a cheap price, as diners can get an inexpensive two-course menu. The first course ( entrada) is often a choice of ceviche or soup, and the second course ( segundo) is fried meat or fish with rice.

The market for fruits and vegetables in the Surquillo district (only a 15-minute walk from our Spanish school in Lima. Look in Google Maps) is a definite highlight during your stay in Lima. It stands out as one of the few remaining traditional markets in the Lima metropolitan area, offering the widest variety of exotic Peruvian fruits. Some top recommendations include "chirimoya," "lucuma," "pacay," "granadilla," "pepino dulce," "tuna" (cactus fruit), and "pitahaya." Chirimoya and lucuma are particularly popular in Peru for making smoothies and milkshakes, so you can either purchase them to prepare at home or visit "La Lucha" in Miraflores.

One of my favorite markets in Lima is the fascinating and diverse Mercado de Surquillo (Avenida Paseo de la Republica at Ricardo Palma, Miraflores/Surquillo), where Limeños and many of the top chefs in town go to get fresh produce, seafood, meats, and a wide array of kitchen implements. It’s a terrific food-shopping and cultural experience, and in recent years, several really nice food stands have opened in and around the market.

While the most advertised among tourists is the one located in Surquillo called Mercado N.1 de Surquillo, just a walk away from most Miraflores hotels, it is not the one we recommend the most. Sure, it’s a reasonably good market, and of course, the easiest to access for most tourists. But if you want to take your market experience to the next level, then you will want to consider Mercado Central and Mercado de Magdalena.

Located centrally, Mercado Surquillo is another farmer’s market where you can try all kinds of foods at a reasonable price. If you are particularly curious to taste local fruits and vegetables that are exclusive to the region, this market will surprise you with camote, morada, rocoto, camu camu and much more. If you speak Spanish, use your skills to converse with the sellers and learn more about street food in Lima.
