Reviews Summary

El Chinito is a beloved Peruvian institution famous for its legendary chicharrón sandwiches, praised for their juicy pork and perfectly crispy skin. Many appreciate the generous portions and authentic flavors. However, some diners have found certain meats dry and tough, and the service can be inconsistent.

"Came here to try one of the sandwiches recommended by my Peruvian friend. He said if you go here you have to get the Chicharron sandwich. The meat was amazing, crispy outside but soft inside. It had so much flavor but the best part was the pickled onions that came with the sandwich. It had a hint of lime which putting everything together made it insanely tasty. Would get this sandwich again and would also love to try other sandwiches."

"what can I say this place is one of my favorites for pan con chicharron and the ribs. every time I come to Peru I have to come here the chinitos in Miraflores is the best. food, customer service, is 100% definitely recommend come here when you are in Lima. there is several other chinitos but this is the one I always come."

Carmen

"Don’t make the mistake I made: the ‘pane’ in the combos does NOT mean you can pick your sandwich - it’s for you to assemble your own. That was a costly mistake as we ended up accidentally ordering twice the appropriate amount due to the mistranslation - which the waiter only delivered with gusto, without repeating our order or cautioned on portions.

On the food, we found the chicharron, butifarra, and turkey all dry and tough. I was shocked that even the chicharron does not came with crackling, and barely any fat. However I think this is how the locals prefer it, given the queue that we endured!"

Restaurants in Lima

Born in a run-down barrio in central Lima in 1960, this chain of sandwich shops has exploded in recent years to become a Peruvian institution. It's a business that focuses all its energies on a single goal: making first-rate chicharrón (fried pork) and turkey sandwiches slathered with zarza criolla. The result is a shining example of Peruvians' genius for turning humble ingredients into culinary art.

What to Eat in Lima

A must-try for first-time visitors is the long-standing sangucheria (Peruvian sandwich) spot, El Chinito (not too far from the Plaza de Armas), which has been serving fried and roasted pork sandwiches (known as chicharrón and chanchito asado) since 1960. Meanwhile, Asian influences shine through at chifas (Chinese-Peruvian restaurants), such as Salón de la Felicidad and Chifa Wa Lok, in the historic city center and Madam Tusan in Miraflores.

Okay, so I’m not the monogamous kinda gal… I kinda sorta cheated on La Lucha with El Chinito. There’s something about the bread, meat, and sauce that make this sandwich the absolute tops. BUT – word to the wise: El Chinito has various locations, the best is the main central sucursal… I had a bad experience at the Barranco branch.

Félix Yong’s restaurant, El Chinito, is an obsession of mine, and it is the perfect place to try con chicharrón. Founded in 1960, the establishment has an ornate tiled floor and walls, a counter with different kinds of meat and piles of French bread. (The bread is not from France; it is just called French, but no one knows why.)
