What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Full Steam Tromsø offers a unique dining experience blending traditional Norwegian cuisine with a historic atmosphere. Diners praise the fresh seafood, particularly the salmon, and the intriguing local delicacies like whale steak and cod tongue. The restaurant's setting within a former fish factory, complete with a museum, adds to its charm. However, some guests find the prices high and the service inconsistent, especially during busy periods.
"Definitely would recommend this restaurant! Cool atmosphere, very friendly staff, tasty food!
We ordered caviar for a starter because neither of us had ever tried it. It was a little to fishy for us, but we're glad we gave it a shot. For mains, I got the whale steak and really enjoyed it. It was similar to a beef steak, just more tender and less meaty of a taste. My wife got the salmon and it was phenomenal. We ordered the cheesecake for dessert and it hit the spot to close the meal. Thanks so much!"

"Had the reindeer stew and fish soup. While the food is good, €65 for a bowl of soup and stew is quite pricy even for local standards. It’s a nice place to sit at though. The interior is very cozy and if the weather is good, can always sit out at the pier and the view is really nice. Check out the menu first before deciding if you want to dine here."

"Very nice! Nice outdoor seating. Interesting food. We had whale stake which was very interesting. The cod tongue was yummy too."

Tromsø: Norway's Gorgeous Gateway To The North
With just the opposite vibe of Emmas, the brand-new Full Steam restaurant occupies one of the city’s cavernous old wharf warehouses that date from the late-19th/early-20th century. The entire back of the building, whose original name was the Bangsund building, is essentially a museum, filled as it is with vintage tools of the trade in the cod and stockfish industry upon which much of the Norwegian economy was once built—from fishing boats to cod liver oil production (no surprise perhaps, as the proprietor comes from the fishing center of Lofoten). First timers to Tromsø must sample both the delicacies of fried cod tongue and cod caviar.

Where to eat in Tromsø
Full Steam was the restaurant that we had a snack after the cruise through the fjords, the building had already served years ago as a base for fishermen and for that reason it still houses a museum about the fishing culture in Norway in the back. Their menu has many typical dishes like cod and seafood. We ate a shrimp salad sandwich that had ‘thousands’ of shrimp and we also tried the waffle with the local selection of cheese and jams.

The Ultimate Guide to Visiting Tromsø in the Winter
Full Steam is an eclectic restaurant full of interesting artifacts inspired by the fishing history of the area. It’s a small menu, and they originally told me they were unable to accommodate a vegetarian. However, they ended up serving me a vegetarian version of their popular fish cakes dish, which was quite delicious.

If you’re vegetarian, or travelling to Tromsø with vegetarians, be aware that not every restaurant will have options for you. And some will only have one or two (which I don’t mind). We booked a table at Full Steam for dinner on a Saturday night because it was highly rated and had things I could eat.
