We can only assume that stepping foot inside this gastropub is as close as we could get to visiting a long lost Norwegian aunt for a home cooked meal. The vibe at Pingvinen is homely and warm, while the food itself was tasty and will likely be some of the best we’ll remember from Norway. Being one of the most expensive countries in the world to visit, we were overall pleasantly surprised by the prices (with a main meal costing somewhere between 200-400NOK) and the meals themselves were to die for.

Our travels also took us to both Pingvinen and Naboen – casual bars with no airs or graces about themselves, that stocked a wide variety of great Norwegian beer by many of the breweries already mentioned. Mention here needs to go to the Rundemanen Rye Stout by 7 Fjell which was on tap at Naboen. I’m pretty sure this was my first rye stout – and it flowed wonderfully from the initial roasted, spicey, chocolatey notes through to an almost sour bitterness on the finish.

I can’t give a better recommendation for dinner than the truly Norweigian style local, Pingvinen (translating to The Penguin). Based just a short walk away from the street art wall on Vaskerelven, they offer a range of excellent traditional style dishes which are nothing short of delicious. It has got a wonderful authentic laid-back vibe enhanced by an extremely friendly service, which instantly makes you feel welcome when you walk through the door.

The place was packed with locals and tourists eating and drinking, enjoying the locally brewed beers.

Ask any local for their view on the city’s best bar and this Bergen institution will likely top their list. A gastropub with a strong focus on Norwegian food, expect rustic stews, buttery cod and traditional meatballs, washed down with local beers. When the kitchen closes at 10pm, Pingvinen transforms into a meeting place for a diverse range of Bergen locals, young and old.

So the highlights of our afternoon in Bergen include the Old Bergen Museum, Fantoft Stave Church, Fløyen and a delicious dinner at Pingvinen. We did return to Bergen a few days later before flying out so I included the lunch we had from a great little Norwegian burger joint, Søstrene Hagelin at the end of this post.

By now it was getting late and Linn took us to Pingvinen (Vaskerelven 14) where everybody seemed to know her name. That’s not just the words from the theme song to America’s favorite fictional bar, but it’s the barometer for all good pubs across the world. This was indeed a lively place.

Another and slightly lesser-known gem is the gastropub Pingvinen. Expect hearty traditional Norwegian dishes such as meatballs and pickled fish. And not to forget, lush popcorn with a generous amount of melted butter!

Pingvinen welcomes all Norwegian cuisine enthusiasts with open arms!. The atmospherical interior, designed according to the best authentic Scandinavian traditions, is also a catch.
