How cliche, Scottish people recommending pie eating BUT devouring one of these delicious creations by the beautiful lake was one of our favourite memories from Te Anau. Miles Better Pies offers the perfect budget friendly food that (as the name describes) were miles better than any other pie we had in New Zealand – possibly because the location was so beautiful!. If pies aren’t your thing or you’re not restricted to a backpacking budget there are many restaurants in Te Anauthat cater to all tastes.

There should be a rule that in every small New Zealand town if they have a local pie shop then you must try it. In Te Anau ‘Miles Better Pies’ offers up 16 varieties of this kiwi classic ranging from the classics like mince and cheese and venison to their own creation the ‘taco pie’. If you need a quick eat on your way to Milford or a an afternoon snack after a day in the hills, Miles Better Pies sell a variety of pies, pasties, sandwiches, homemade cakes and slices.

Te Anau also has a pizzeria and a couple of popular cafes like the The Sandfly Cafe best known for its breakfast or Miles Better Pies and more which has a range of fresh pies, sandwiches, and coffee. For dinner and/or drinks, the favorites include The Ranch Bar & Grill (casual, young crowd), The Moose Bar & Restaurant (casual pub), and Redcliff Cafe (more upscale with New Zealand mains and wines, live music). But most importantly, it is the home of Mile’s Better Pies shop. Mile’s is one of those road trip stops that everyone you meet says you must make, so you do. With only a few hours to spare in Te Anau for internet access and vital supplies, we visited Mike’s twice to devour the light and rich pastry crust enveloping meat, chicken and vegetable pies.
