Located in the heart of Mount Maunganui, Astrolabe Brew Bar is a lively gastropub that tantalizes taste buds with its craft beers and mouthwatering pub-style food. Astrolabe is a Mac’s Brewery bar which has become Mount Maunganui’s famed gastro-bar and is seen as the heart of the local community. Its home-away-from-home decor is rustic and vintage, yet ultra-casual with its comfy lounge chairs, fireplace, and walls decorated with vintage collectibles. The indoor bar and social spaces have all been designed to feel like one huge, cosy lounge and dining room.

I didn’t eat any food here, but I did consume a few glasses of Mac’s Isaac's Cider. The fun atmosphere created by the nostalgic kiwi-summer-retro decor make this a pretty choice place to hang out and sink a few cold ones. We sat on 70’s/80’s style yard furniture, our feet resting on astro-turf, in an outdoor living room setting next to an old caravan (which was also a seating option).

One of the highlights at Astrolabe is their quiz night, which offers a fun and interactive way to enjoy an evening out. Astrolabe is also known for its creative and delicious cocktails, making it a favourite spot for both locals and visitors.

Macau is the brainchild of well-known local couple Kirsty and Joseph Goddard, who have been the force behind most of the area’s best eateries over the past decade, including Astrolabe and Tay Street Beach Café. Macau was inspired by Kirsty’s trips to New York, where she fell in love with David Chang’s Momofuku, and Nobu New York.

Whether it's a casual drink or a boogie late into the evening this bar has something for everyone. The cosy interior with vintage armchairs and a roaring fire is great in winter and the bright coloured deck chairs and picnic tables in the yard can be enjoyed throughout the hot summer months.

Astrolabe offers a great ambiance and quirky decoration, a standard bar menu of burgers and pizza, they do cocktails and always have a happy hour or some promotion on. Just over the road is Brew Bar, which is open late and will have the tunes cranked up til the early hours.
