Rata is consistently praised for its exceptional fine dining, with many highlighting the outstanding food quality, innovative flavors, and impeccable service. Diners rave about signature dishes like the cheddar donuts and wagyu short rib, appreciating the focus on locally sourced ingredients. While the ambiance is generally loved, a few reviews mention minor service inconsistencies and one outlier described inedible food, though this is not a common sentiment.
"Genuinely one of the best meals we've ever had, anywhere in the world. Food was outstanding - clever, interesting and absolutely delicious. Hard to pick a favourite but the cheddar donuts were incredible.
The restaurant itself is fairly understated but once the food comes out it all makes sense.
Great wine and fantastic, friendly service too. A must try in Queenstown!"

"👍
Our best dining experience in Queenstown!
From the moment we arrived we were invited with warmth and the atmosphere was buzzing with a vibrant yet relaxed energy.
Oysters were fresh, briny and an absolute divine- though we liked it without the vinaigrette it came with
Each dish was incredibly delicious with the freshest local ingredients, especially the venison!!!
Drinks were WOW! Their remake of bourbon and coke and their special Arrowtown cocktail was a standout!
Loved everything so much that we came the second time in a week!
Huge thanks to the team for making fantastic recommendations and for making our nights memorable
Rata is a non negotiable stop! Freshest delicious food, impeccable drinks, and service that makes you feel like family. We’ll be back again:)"

"Food was impeccable at RATA! Every dish was done so well - cook, balance of flavor, presentation. My favourites were the donuts, perfectly cooked salmon with kelp risotto and the caramel miso sake ice cream sandwich. Service was attentive and approachable. The lemon meringue martini to wrap up our evening at RATA was a nice touch by the team (thank you! ) I would highly recommend checking RATA out when you’re in Queenstown."

Bluff oysters in Queenstown
Sorry, I don't know exactly where you will find them, but I assume Rata will have them as a special, maybe Amisfield will incorporate them into the menu. They're an obsession down here. I just had a look at TA reviews for Rata and many reviewers mentioned the lovely Bluff oysters they had, though one patron complained how the restaurant had sold out of them and they had to look enviously at the last oysters being consumed by diners at the adjacent table.

The restaurant works with small farmers and producers across Otago and the South Island to keep the ingredients seasonal, many of which are harvested by the chefs themselves. Bickford has brought the menu a fresh update inspired by his Kiwi upbringing with dishes like kingfish Crudo cured in elderflower vinegar with apple and hemp seed and a classic Southland cheese roll upgraded with Speights mustard, cornichon jam, and fried yeast.

Book a table today because we are confidently naming Rātā Queenstown Central’s best restaurant by the region’s best (IOHO) restaurateur Fleur Caulton. Tirelessly championing the town centre, Fleur has protected Rātā through a storm of issues and with Friedrich Beloussow now leading the kitchen, the restaurant is as captivating today as it was 12 years ago. Obviously way ahead of its time, the room still feels fresh and appropriate for a modern neighbourhood restaurant that brings the surrounding landscape into town through a screen of native trees and the much-photographed mural on the back wall.

This is my 3rd visit to Rata and I actually prefer their bites and entres to their mains and desserts. So, the last two visits, we've dined with more of a 'tapa's style of eating' in mind - ordering raw (oysters), entrees, sides and plenty of booze, skipping the mains entirely!. You are definitely paying fine dining prices but with that, the service has been impeccable every time and we've felt very well looked after.
