What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Depot is celebrated for its vibrant atmosphere and consistently delicious, creative dishes, especially the fresh oysters and shareable plates. While many praise the friendly service and lively vibe, some diners have noted slow kitchen times and occasionally found certain dishes like steak or bone marrow to be less impressive than others.
"We are visiting Auckland and stayed close to Depot - over the 3 days we stayed here, we dined here 3 times!! We sampled a big portion of the menu so here is my review (in order of our favourite dishes). Needless to say, we loved our experience here so we have kept coming back!
MAIN DISHES TO SHARE
1. Trevally sashimi - best dish on the menu in my opinion, superb flavour combination and very fresh!
2. Snapper sliders - another hit - the snapper fillets are grilled to perfection, while the texture of the bread and delicious mayo made the perfect pairing. Trevally and sliders are must orders!!
3. Salmon tartare - the NZ salmon sashimi was really tasty and fresh. I liked the contrast of the cold sashimi against the freshly fried potato scallop on which it was served.
4. Lemon butter sole - this is a grilled fish served in a lemon butter sauce with salty fried capers on top. The fish was cooked perfectly! It was served with some slices of cooked bread which we didn’t end up touching much.
5. Mussels - I thought this was a creative dish, mussels paired with nduya and crunchy topping. It is a bit heavier than the other seafood dishes on the menu due to the oils from the nduya.
6. Fig with straciatella - this was delicious, all ingredients used in this dish were very high quality. This dish was a bit smaller than the others and perhaps was not as good value for $28 NZD.
7. Potato skins - crispy, truffley and cheesy, and served with a unique spiced tomato sauce made by Al Brown. This is the perfect bar snack.
8. Roasted eggplant - delicious and saucy with a crunchy fried onion topping! Just note this veggie dish isn’t exactly healthy!
9. Steak - this was a little chewy and served lukewarm, I thought this was okay / more average compared to the others dishes.
10. Marrow - this looks impressive and i thought there would be a huge burst of flavour… but i didn’t quite get the hype with this dish.
OTHER / DESSERTS
- Oysters - I sampled 2 oysters (one of each variety, which were delicious
- Sugar Pie - similar to a caramel slice
- Cookie skillet - my pick of the two desserts we tried, would suggest sharing as it is quite heavy."

"Here’s the improved version with correct punctuation and grammar:
We love Depot! The place was amazing and full of good vibes. The food was delicious. We ordered a lot but finished everything! This is our second time visiting, and we always make sure to include Depot in our itinerary whenever we’re in Auckland. We also love how friendly the crew was. We also ordered dessert but were not able to take a photo of it anymore."

"I would highly recommend everyone to try Depot! The overall atmosphere of the restaurant is incredibly friendly and comfortable, and the service from the staff is absolutely amazing! A special shout out to the lovely Alex! She is the sweetest, most wonderful, and most energetic person I’ve ever met. We were truly drawn to her warmth and enthusiasm. She took great care of us (and every other customer!) throughout our visit, and when she found out that today was my partner’s and my 9th anniversary, she surprised us with a complimentary dessert as a gift. We felt so grateful and genuinely happy.
On top of that, the food and drinks we ordered were absolutely delicious! We will definitely be coming back again. You guys made our anniversary so special! You absolutely made my day! Thank you so much!"

Metro — The best restaurants in the Auckland CBD
Auckland’s obsession with Al Brown’s Depot can be measured both by the energy in the always-packed dining room and by the number of oysters shucked there each week – up to 1600. Seven years in, this SkyCity stalwart is still one of our favourites, thanks in no small way to the unflappable servers whose ability to charm even when the place is full is a testament to their excellent training. We’re also seduced by the menu, which seldom changes – hapuku sliders, pork hock and sugar pie are still the mainstays – but always satisfies.
Best places to eat if you’re a solo diner in Auckland
Given its proximity to the Sky Tower and several nearby hotels, it should come as no surprise that Depot is commonly frequented by tourists and diners visiting Auckland. With plentiful high tables, bar seating and a blanket ‘no’ on reservations, it’s the perfect place for those eating alone to squeeze in and watch the world (and its tourists) go by. Although the menu is designed to share, everything is still equally delicious when consumed by one - especially when paired with a glass of vino from the carefully curated wine list.

A local’s guide to Auckland, New Zealand
It’s difficult to define New Zealand cuisine, but chef Al Brown has made the best effort at doing so, roaming the country’s North and South islands for artisanal, unique-to-here ingredients and assigning them starring roles on the menu at Depot. That’s why you’ll see the provenance of many ingredients listed, like a culinary map of the country. Start with freshly shucked oysters and proceed to charcuterie, lamb ribs, potato skins, a side of kahawai and wine by the carafe, rather than the glass.
