What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Chez Lamine Hadj Mustapha is lauded for its exceptionally tender and flavorful lamb dishes, particularly the mechoui and tangia, offering an authentic taste of Marrakech. While many praise the delicious meat and rooftop views, some diners report issues with cleanliness, chaotic service, and a perceived lack of hospitality, especially during busy periods.
"Ignore the negative reviews. If you want Authentic Tangie, this is your spot. Our food tour guide took us here and we loved it so much we came back. We also noticed another local tour guides coming here. Why? Because the restaurant actually serves authentically cooked Tangie which needs 4-6 hours covered in coals. Post of the restaurants you find in Marrakech will not serve it authentically and you can tell, it is amazing. That is why the Tangie costs $20 but two people can share one plate, it is enough. Highly recommend if you want an authentic food experience!"

Just off the northern Djemaa el Fna at the entrance to Mechoui Alley, Hadj Mustapha is another Marrakshi institution. The 'fooding' is as mixed as the decor, a fusion of French, Moroccan, Thai and Japanese influences that produces some surprisingly adventurous dishes (shark tagine with apricot and courgette), as well as others one might assume are not high on the fashion list, a roast rabbit among them. Sprinkled within the traditional spots of the Old Town are laidback rooftops and romantic, secluded courtyard restaurants.

Just off the northern Djemaa el-Fna at the entrance to Mechoui Alley, Hadj Mustapha is another Marrakshi institution. It’s mostly famous for one thing: an intensely flavoursome, buttery soft beef dish called tanjia. Not to be confused with tagine, the name translates roughly as “bachelor’s stew”, down to the fact that it is often eaten by single men, slow-cooked in a distinct amphora-shaped clay pot over the fires that feed the local hammam.
