Café des Espices, situated–suitably–in the Médina’s spice souk, is a great quick stop for a pot of tea between browsing. I like sitting on the ground floor with the bustle of the bazaar laid out right in front of me, but the terrace is popular, too. Around the corner is Nomad, where on the ground floor you’ll find a little shop with kitchen goods (more great little gifts), and up to the rooftop, a busy, trendy café with views and mezze made with local ingredients–both excellent.

Another great spot is the terrace of the Café des Épices, which overlooks the lively Jemaa el-Fnaa square and offers a great vantage point to observe the city’s daily life. The Jardin Majorelle also features a tranquil garden with several viewpoints that offer stunning views of the city and the Atlas Mountains. The rooftop terraces of many of the city’s riads and hotels also offer great views of the city and are a great spot to relax and unwind after a long day of exploring.

Located right on the "Place des Epices", Café des Épices was one of the first rooftop restaurants in Marrakech. It is spread over three floors, you can sit in the sun in the front and look out over the market stalls and people passing by, or you can choose the second or third floor and have the most beautiful view over the square and to the Atlas Mountains. Again, they don't serve alcohol, but they do serve a variety of coffees, including my favorite, the cinnamon coffee.

Since it’s located in a very central souk area, I often stop there for lunch or coffee. Our favourite rooftop bars for mint tea and refreshments include Cafe des Epices and Nomad in the spice market square, plus Cafe de France and Le Grand Balcon du Cafe Glacier in Jemaa el Fna, and the rooftop cafe in Le Jardin Secret. A pot of mint tea is generally pretty cheap, costing around 10 Dirhams (80 pence / 0.90 cents EU / 1 USD), and chilled soft drinks are also usually available – truly a ‘funky, cold medina’!

This coffee shop and restaurant in the middle of the Medina draws locals and travelers like moths to a flame⁠— and for good reason. The main floor and terrasse remains super casual, and a great spot to people watch, while the rooftop level is a modern Moroccan restaurant. We recommend the vegetarian tagine, which is packed with potatoes, turnips, fennel, carrots, green beans, and onion⁠— and will only run you about $6.

there we followed Gemma through the souks and down Semmarine to arrive on Place des Epices. Turned right and a crowded passage gave way to the old slave market where witchcraft accessories hang in front of shops, alongside skins of most exotic animals. After a few failed attempts at purchasing a kaftan (anyone sees the connection with the cooking here ?) , we got back to the spice market and into a herbalist shop.

Not to be confused with Terrasse des Epices in Souk Cherifia, the food at Cafe des Epices is simple yet satisfying, and is served throughout the day, just what you want when you need a break from the souks and the square.

IMHO this is one of the few restaurants in Marrakech that lives up to all the hype. See, Cafe des Epices is very popular since it’s well-known along the Marrakech tourist trail as one of the best rooftop restaurants in Marrakech. However, if you actually want to sit on the roof then stop by for breakfast since the restaurant will get pretty crowded later in the day.

I went to Café des Epices early in the morning for breakfast, which in Morocco means I was there for opening at 9. I had the place entirely to myself and was excited to head to the rooftop, but was told it wasn’t open. Despite not getting views from up top, being in the heart of the médina meant I got to watch all the shop owners opening up their stores.

Café Des Épices, located just minutes away from its sister Nomad, offers equally beautiful views of a colorful square. An open space that immediately feels like a relieve when making your way to the vibrant, but narrow, streets of the souk. This lovely place has more of a casual vibe to it, making it perfect for daytime meals or some Moroccan whiskey.

Café Des Épices is the only café where I don’t head straight for the roofgarden. From the factory windows of the middle floor you can enjoy an unobstructed view onto Souk Laghzel, where traditional wickerwork is sold. The service might not be the friendliest, but the view still does make it worthwhile for a quick break from the trouble of the souks.

Definitely stop for a tagine at Cafe des Epices overlooking the souk. Some places look a little sketch, but there is one restaurant group that has several well reviewed restaurants geared towards tourists, but not in a cheesy way.

It’s also a nice place to drink a mint tea or a fresh orange juice on the terrace of Café des Epices, while the children play with their new cold blood friend. (Medina, Rahba Qedima Square, a little west behind Jemaa El Fna).
