Café des Épices is lauded for its stunning rooftop views of Marrakech's bustling square and its vibrant atmosphere, offering a welcome respite from the medina's energy. Diners consistently praise the delicious food, refreshing drinks, and reasonable prices, making it a popular spot for both locals and tourists. While some note a shift towards a more tourist-focused vibe and slightly reduced portion sizes, the cafe remains a highly recommended destination for its unique ambiance and tasty offerings.
"I visited this restaurant every day during my stay in Marrakesh, and it quickly became my go-to spot. The food is absolutely delicious, and the service never disappoints—always friendly and attentive. One of my favorite things was sitting outside, soaking up the sun while watching the hustle and bustle of the square. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy a meal and people-watch as locals and tourists go about their day. Whether for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, this place was consistently great, and I can’t recommend it enough!"

"I’ve been coming to Café des Épices for years, and it’s still one of my favorite spots in the heart of the Medina. As a local from Marrakech, I always appreciate a place that stays consistent—and this one does. The food is tasty, the drinks are refreshing, and the rooftop view over the bustling souks is just perfect. It’s a great mix of calm and energy, right in the middle of the Medina. Highly recommend whether you’re visiting for the first time or looking for a familiar place to unwind."
Fadoua Atif
"We ordered the cauliflower burrito and harira. The soup was well balanced but the burrito was very average. It tasted very sweet due to the sweet potato but not balanced well with spices. The cauliflower could have also been warmer. On the positive side, it is quite a popular place especially because of the amazing rooftop and sunset view. The place gets very busy between 6.30-8pm. the service was good too."

In keeping with the name, this café in the medina's "spice square" offers spiced teas and coffees along with a range of freshly squeezed fruit juices, smoothies, and light snacks, salads, and sandwiches. There’s no better place to sit and watch this daily theater unfold than at the Café des Épices, the first of several that have now opened there, but still our favorite for excellent coffee, fresh salads, sandwiches, and tagines.

A quick guide to shopping in Marrakech
Café des Espices, situated–suitably–in the Médina’s spice souk, is a great quick stop for a pot of tea between browsing. I like sitting on the ground floor with the bustle of the bazaar laid out right in front of me, but the terrace is popular, too. Around the corner is Nomad, where on the ground floor you’ll find a little shop with kitchen goods (more great little gifts), and up to the rooftop, a busy, trendy café with views and mezze made with local ingredients–both excellent.

Another great spot is the terrace of the Café des Épices, which overlooks the lively Jemaa el-Fnaa square and offers a great vantage point to observe the city’s daily life. The Jardin Majorelle also features a tranquil garden with several viewpoints that offer stunning views of the city and the Atlas Mountains. The rooftop terraces of many of the city’s riads and hotels also offer great views of the city and are a great spot to relax and unwind after a long day of exploring.
The best rooftops in Marrakech
Located right on the "Place des Epices", Café des Épices was one of the first rooftop restaurants in Marrakech. It is spread over three floors, you can sit in the sun in the front and look out over the market stalls and people passing by, or you can choose the second or third floor and have the most beautiful view over the square and to the Atlas Mountains. Again, they don't serve alcohol, but they do serve a variety of coffees, including my favorite, the cinnamon coffee.

5 Cafés to Visit in Marrakech Morocco
Situated in the middle of Marrakech’s medina, overlooking Souk Laghzel, where artisans create all kinds of things from straw and wicker. Since it’s located in a very central souk area, I often stop there for lunch or coffee. As with all the cafés I mention in this blog, the food is a bit overpriced for the quality, but it’s worth paying a little extra for the chance to quiet your mind and enjoy the views of the souks from above!

Our favourite rooftop bars for mint tea and refreshments include Cafe des Epices and Nomad in the spice market square, plus Cafe de France and Le Grand Balcon du Cafe Glacier in Jemaa el Fna, and the rooftop cafe in Le Jardin Secret. A pot of mint tea is generally pretty cheap, costing around 10 Dirhams (80 pence / 0.90 cents EU / 1 USD), and chilled soft drinks are also usually available – truly a ‘funky, cold medina’!
Where To Eat, Stay, And Shop In Marrakech
This coffee shop and restaurant in the middle of the Medina draws locals and travelers like moths to a flame— and for good reason. The main floor and terrasse remains super casual, and a great spot to people watch, while the rooftop level is a modern Moroccan restaurant. We recommend the vegetarian tagine, which is packed with potatoes, turnips, fennel, carrots, green beans, and onion— and will only run you about $6.

there we followed Gemma through the souks and down Semmarine to arrive on Place des Epices.
