If you thought that Pronto Pizza as a legendary as it gets for restaurants in Kotor then you are very much mistaken. BBQ Tanjga is a no frills, family-run establishment that is a kind of butchers, kind of café just outside Kotor Old Town.As the name would suggest, BBQ Tanjga specialises in grilled meat, Balkan style. After you walk past the rotisserie chickens outside the front door, dripping their fat onto the thinly sliced fried potatoes beneath, you are confronted with more raw meat than you can shake a stick at, but fear not.

Finally, as we’d almost used up all our Euros by the end of the holiday, we decided to have a take-away so visited the extremely popular-looking Tanjga, a small roadside outlet selling various cooked meats, situated just opposite the ‘Ideal’ supermarket near the roundabout for Budva. When we came in here it was total chaos!. It seems to be a real favourite with the locals and was packed with people queuing at the counter ordering from the huge range of options, from whole cooked chickens to kebabs, burgers and much more.

Set just a few minutes away from the Old Town of Kotor, BBQ Tanjga is a prized restaurant that locals often choose for their incredibly delicious meat dishes and as a great on-budget place to enjoy. Without hesitation he said, “BBQ Tanjga.” He gave us directions and we were on our way. Located outside the city walls, BBQ Tanjga offers a wide array of grilled meats, seafood, and traditional Montenegrin specialties. There was a pretty substantial line when we arrived, with a crowd waiting to order along a class encloused meat display.

If your time is limited, we recommend hiking up to the Kotor Fortress, walking the City Walls, visiting St. Tryphon’s Cathedral (4 EUR entrance fee), eating lunch at Konoba Scala Santa, or venturing outside the City Walls to eat lunch at BBQ Tanjga (casual eatery), or Restaurant Galion (fine dining restaurant).

When it comes to piles of grilled meat, Tanjga wins the day here, although good luck finding a seat. I absolutely love a butchers-slash-bistro, where you can point at your preferred cut of meat and eat it moments later. Aljoša i Saša in Banja Luka is one such magical spot, and Tanjga ticks that box in Kotor.

The best way to describe Tanjga is half butcher shop, half deli - you select the meat, and they grill it up for you - then stuff them into sandwiches with veggies. The crowd was made up of mostly locals; in my broken Serbo-Croatian, I sheepishly asked the girl manning the meats to surprise us.

True story: I was on my way to a vegetarian restaurant when a fellow travel blogger invited me to BBQ Tanjga. What a 360 – it was the meatiest of meat feasts!. Although tourists do visit, this no-frills grill house feels off-the-beaten-track due to its location outside the city walls.

Also just outside of Kotor Old Town you’ll find the best restaurant in the city!. We first spotted Tanjga when walking from the bus station into town. The sweet smell of roasting chickens and potatoes pulled us in, and we ended up going back every day.

Another more casual option is Tanjga, which holds the #3 spot for restaurants in Kotor according to TripAdvisor. It’s a barbecue restaurant, with roast meat and veggie options – reviews say it’s great food at an affordable price.

For a memorable dining experience, savor the sunset views at Tanjga, a restaurant known for its fresh seafood. Conclude your day with a romantic evening at the Church of St. Luke, a hidden gem with a peaceful atmosphere.

Wrapping up our Montenegro trip, we headed to BBQ Tanjga for a traditional Montenegrin BBQ. While it wasn’t our favorite meal of the trip, it was a great, casual and very local way to bring our journey to an end.

It’s located just outside of the fortified walls so it has more of a local feeling to it. It’s a pretty no-fuss place where you order at the counter and serve yourself drinks from the fridge.

Tanjga specialises in grilled meats and their serving sizes are so big that you could easily leave here feeling full and only spend 10€ for two!
