Reviews Summary

Modern Nomads is lauded for its authentic Mongolian cuisine, stunning traditional decor, and immersive cultural experiences, including live performances. While many praise the friendly staff and delicious food, some diners have experienced slow service and found the dishes to be less authentic than expected. Portions are noted as generous, making it a good place for sharing.

"I had an ambiguous experience with this place.
On the first day, there was a family commemoration event during lunch without any notice on special service. This was not the neighbourhood I would like to have for my lunch, and so I went away.
For my second trial everything was perfect. The service was fast and friendly, the local dishes were delicious.
Cards are accepted. There might be some difficulties with an English-speaking staff, but the menu is available in English as well.
I can recommend this restaurant to get a touch of local but refined cuisine."

Ekaterina Kozyreva

"It was a great pleasure—not just for the eyes, but for my taste buds too! I absolutely love Modern Nomads. I waited 3 years to try their new menu, and it was totally worth it.

While we were dining, there was a live performance of Mongolian folk dance and music—such a beautiful atmosphere!

I truly love this place and feel so proud of our brothers and sisters who created something so special. It’s the kind of place that leaves you with the most precious memories. ❤️🇲🇳"

Ariunzaya B

"Nomads was recommended by a local for authentic Mongolian food. The decor in the restaurant was stunning. The horse meet appetizer was delicious. I also tried the lamb dumplings, which were also amazing."

It's fairly safe to say no one visits Mongolia for the food but if you're looking for local cuisine (think horse steaks and goat sausages), try Modern Nomads; its extensive menu also has vegetarian options (Baga Toyruu, +976 1131 8744, modernnomads.mn). Otherwise, there are Korean restaurants such as Te Ju Yon (Baruun Selbe 15/34-35, Chingeltei district); Delhi Darbar for excellent North Indian food (Prime Minister Tserendorj's Street 47/1, +976 1131 3043); Veranda, an Italian eatery with couches instead of chairs (Jamyn Gunii Gudamj 5/1, +976 1133 0818); and there is a pizza place called American Ger'll (get it?).

Old Bones and New Adventures: Mongolia Inside & Out 103

Chains that specialize in 'traditional Mongolian cuisine', like Modern Nomads, are a huge ripoff: expensive, mediocre food at best, and incredibly touristy. Instead, try a buuz (steamed dumpling) place or a guanz (Mongolia's answer to the greasy spoon). I recommend Bayalag Buuz on the east side of the State Department Store: cheap, fast, and tasty.
