Tacos Sonorita Olas Altas are probably the best tacos al pastor in Puerto Vallarta but without the wait. We are always greeted with generous portions, competitively priced menu options, including vegetarian and vegan choices, and a cozy seating arrangement that offers a reprieve from the bustling sidewalk queues.

And I ordered tacos at least once a day throughout our trip. My absolute favorite spot was Sonarita Olas Altas, a restaurant that was both in the middle of the hustle and also still tucked away from the beach. Sonarita personalizes each guest’s experience by letting them first choose the base of their tacos and then providing all the toppings their guests might ask for.

Located in the heart of Olas Altas, Sonorita is a local favorite for Mexican classics, all delivered with a Sonoran twist. The lively, welcoming vibe is matched by a menu focused on top-quality ingredients and expert grilling. It’s the go-to spot for perfectly grilled carne asada and mouthwatering al pastor, and a hit with both locals and savvy visitors.

While the scene unfolding in front of us commanded my attention, uneven sidewalks, high curbs, and cobblestone streets forced me to focus on where my feet were landing. Still, even with eyes peeled (or so I thought), I tripped over an uneven section of sidewalk at a corner. Which, of course, led to jokes about the margaritas I consumed earlier.

As expected, she suggested I get the al pastor tacos which she described as being one of the best in Puerto Vallarta.

Another must-visit taco spot in Puerto Vallarta is Tacos Sonorita. We came to this Romantic Zone restaurant on our food tour and it was one of our favorite stops. Tacos Sonorita is a step up from your typical taco stand, with a full sized restaurant, nice decor and plentiful seating, but it’s still got laid-back vibes.

If you are looking for the best al pastor tacos, this is it. Aside from watching the giant slab of meat rotating in the kitchen, once they put together your order, you will feel like you have died and gone to heaven. It is true that they serve the best tacos al pastor.

The tacos here bring me back to living in Mexico City where there are also unlimited options for tacos. My favorite here is the al pastor tacos and the chicken tacos. Let’s not forget they have some incredible margarita options all for super affordable prices!

Just up the street from Abulon Antojeria del Mar, Al introduced us to Sonorita Ola Altas. The specialty at Sonorita, as it’s commonly known, is tacos al pastor. Al informed us that tacos al pastor was introduced to Mexico by the Lebanese in the 1940s.

Birrieria Liz Both times I ate here, I was the only foreigner. However, they do speak at least some limited English. You can get your birria as beef or goat, and they offer it in other forms besides tacos as well.

Sonorita Olas Alta – Best Al Pastor and Volcan de Bistek I’ve EVER had. This was the last stop for us on our taco tour and it blew our minds away. They’re remodeling and adding a second story.

Pancho’s Takos is famous, and therefore this little Zona Romantica restaurant will almost always have a long line. Is the food good, yes. Is it worth the 45 minute wait, that’s up to you!

From personal experience, this was not at the top of our list for best tacos. However, it has a cool rustic vibe. The margaritas, guacamole, and grilled onions were excellent.

When I tell you I thought I DIEDDD and gone to heaven, I tell NO LIES. The tacos here are in-freaking-credible. They cook the BEST tacos al pastor in the city!
