This trendy mezcal bar and eatery was our first stop upon arrival to the city, with its central location and live music calling to us from the street corner. Turns out, it’s a great place to tick off a few of Oaxaca’s traditional dishes from your foodie bucket list — from mole and tlayuda to chapulines on offer as garnishes on everything from guacamole to your artisanal cocktail. And of course, there’s always mezcal on the menu.

Since we didn’t have a chance to make reservations on our first night in Oaxaca, we stumbled into Expendio Tradicion, which luckily had open seating available. The most exciting and maybe weird part was sitting in the corridor of an indoor “market” they designed to feel like a small town. Many people were staying at the hotel who would come down the stairs and walk by us as we dined.

The huge windows overlooking the streets at the corner of Reforma and Murguia is where you’ll find this Oaxaca restaurant. Expendio Tradición restaurant is owned by the Chagoya family who have been in the mezcal business since 1897. The modern, high design restaurant features mezcal from the Chagoya label and food from Oaxaca made using endemic ingredients.

#4 Expendio Tradicion: They have a snack plate that they said serve 2…oh my gosh aha, take our word for it… it definitely DOES NOT serve 2 I would say more like 4+. We could only eat half of it which is very rare for us. That being said… it definitely still made the list + their cocktails were incredible!
