Chef-owner Elena Reygadas worked for years at London's Michelin-starred Italian restaurant Locando Locatelli before moving back to her hometown in 2011 to open Rosetta in a stunning early 1900s belle epoque mansion. Despite the perfect risottos and handmade pastas in varying shapes, what her cuisine primarily takes from Italy is reliance on local and seasonal ingredients (the olive oil is from Baja California, the burrata cheese made in the town of Atlixco)—but much of the food has a creative Mexican heart. Breads both sweet and savory are baked in-house, and sold from the adjoining bakery, which has two other locations nearby.

A romantic setting in a centuries-old Mexico City mansion is reason enough for Rosetta to be named among the most romantic restaurants in the capital. But chef Elena Reygadas also fuses Mexican ingredients (endemic fruits and veggies, chilis and herbs) with traditional Italian recipes to rave reviews. The interior comprises several smaller rooms, each intimate and cozy, while the outside covered patio features painted flowers and vines that curl up the walls.

Some of their guests, namely Mercedes’ family, had never been to Mexico, or Mexico City, so they wanted to list both the “heavy-hitter” recommendations as well as those more off the well-trod path. “We had a mix of some of the really amazing restaurants, like the finer-dining Rosetta, to a tiny hole-in-the-wall taco spot called El Turix, near our host hotel.” As Alex notes, “It's literally a hole in the wall. They pass you tacos through the hole!

You can buy the individual size and enjoy it right there with a fresh coffee, but if you prefer to share, choose the family size and accompany it with a hot chocolate.

While we’re still firmly in the heart of Mexico City’s trendiest neighborhood Colonia Roma, you might be excused for stepping into Rosetta Restaurant and feeling like you’ve just traveled through space and time to an Italian countryside villa. The outside of the restaurant is shrouded in climbing ivy and various plants that invite you in with their freshness on hot summer days, while the imposing entrance in wood and wrought iron is reminiscent of the building’s glorious past as a Porfiriato townhouse, that once probably hosted a well-to-do family of Mexico City’s 19th-century socialites.

This is the first stop for many of my visitors, a favorite dish being the sea bass, though any selection is delicately prepared with just the perfect balance of flavors.

In the latter category sits Elena Reygadas’s Rosetta—she was named the best female chef in the world by the World’s 50 Best Restaurants organization last year, so it should come as no surprise that Reygadas has made the grade here. And while most every restaurant is what we would consider fine dining, one taqueria does appear on the list: Taquería El Califa de León in Mexico City. It is a teeny tiny place with a beautiful, airy bake house at the back of the teeny tiny cafe and it is GREAT. Good bread, friendly people, obviously baking on the premises – fantastic and worth the trip to Roma especially given there is so much more to see and do on the street (Calle Colima – it’s kind of a magic street).

Rosetta - I was so, SO excited to have dinner at Rosetta because I had read so much about Elena Reygadas. She is one of the most famous female chefs in Latin America, and is known for her genius and creative uses of Mexican flavors. The restaurant itself has huge double (triple?) ceilings flowing with greenery - the plates, details, and general dining experience were distinctly feminine and wonderful.

Panaderia Rosetta may have earned its reputation thanks to its ricotta guava pastries, but it’s my top recommendation for coffee in CDMX thanks to its expert barista coffee. I had the best flat white of my entire life on the patio of Panaderia Rosetta; a big call for someone who is on a perpetual hunt for the best flat white. Luke devoured the chilaquiles, while I devoured the overnight baked oats.

The first was Panadería Rosetta, AKA Panadería 179, in its new location on Calle Colima #179, about 1 block west of the mother Rosetta Ristorante Italiano. Previously, we'd purchased and enjoyed Rosetta's Pan Campesino, a hearty, sourdough loaf, as well as the excellent rosemary focaccia served in the restaurant. This time, at the new bakery, we bought two Danish style rolls and a butter croissant.

Rosetta is often cited as one of the top restaurants in Mexico City, and while dinner is good, I actually think the bakery and brunch at Panaderia Rosetta are better than the sit down dinner. I’d personally prioritize a morning stop for a guava roll and a lovely coffee. The bread is unbelievable, the pastries are next-level, and the morning vibe is just more relaxed (though there will be a line).

The question is not whether you want the most delicious pastries of your life (believe me, you do!), but whether you’re prepared to stand in line for them. The lines for this bakery and cafe on Colima (Roma Norte) stretch around the corner every day of the week but particularly on weekends. The guava roll is one of the best sweet treats in CDMX but, let’s face it, nothing is less than delicious.

Rosetta is an almost obnoxiously popular bakery in Roma Norte. It can get unbelievably crowded, especially on the weekends, so I would stop by during the week if at all possible and take your baked goods to go and enjoy them in a nearby park. Now that I’ve given a disclaimer on how overrated at times it may feel, I will say that their pastries are bomb and the best that I’ve had in the city.

Panadería Rosetta (Roma) / Café Nin (Juarez) – My favorite way to welcome myself back to CDMX is by crawling out of bed early on my first morning in the city to make a trip to Panadería Rosetta in Roma. I love grabbing some treats and coffee and then scurrying back to wherever I’m staying to have breakfast in bed. I see this as the quickest way to thrust myself into vacation mode.

Recommended recipe Rosetta There was no way this restaurant could be left off the list. Chef Elena Reygadas has taken Italian recipes and given them a seasonal Mexican twist without losing focus on the simplicity of Mediterranean cooking. The bread served here is incomparable, especially the focaccia they give you as an appetizer; it is extraordinarily soft and flavorful.

It’s around the corner from the neighborhood’s best Italian bistro, Rosetta—more on that in a minute. Another haven away from home is Nima Local House Hotel, a hotel situated in a beautiful, restored house decorated with a mix of traditional and contemporary Mexican design. Nightly turndown comes with a cookie on your pillow—and they even have a gluten-free version.

The secret since Michelin has exposed it for all to see, but Rosetta is one of the most creative restaurants you can add to your destination list in Mexico City. It looks unassuming at first glance—a giant apartment mansion that looks like any other on the street. But behind those doors lies a culinary experience that mixes the best of Mexico with comfy classics.

The last time I was in Mexico City I had a brilliant meal at Rosetta and still dream about the restaurant's focaccia, so this time I decided to check out its sister location; a little panadería, known for its early morning baked goods. is also very good with creamy, yet rich flat white, as well as all of the usual variations you'd expect at a good coffee shop.

There is no better bakery outside France than this (at least not that I’ve found). If you want buttery pastries with a Mexican twist, come to Panaderia Rosetta, get in the long line, order a coffee and ask for the rol de guayaba (guava roll). I also really love the rol de limon, the croissant with almonds and the chocolate croissant (and also the plain one!).

Mexico City is known for its pan dulce (sweet breads), and Panaderia Rosetta is one of the best places to try a few!. It’s a super popular place, but we didn’t have to wait terribly long for our coconut banana cocoa cookie and latte. The guava pastry, cardamom roll, and ricotta cocoa roll are some of the best pastries I’ve ever had.

I read over and over again that Rosetta is one of the best bakeries in CDMX, and therefore one of the best places to eat in Mexico City in general. I don’t disagree, a visit to Panaderia Rosetta is a must while in Mexico City. You have option to dine-in (expect a decent wait around breakfast or lunch) or join the queue for takeaway.

Panaderia Rosetta is a trendy cafe in Mexico City, and even with the long lines out the door, it’s worth it. This is the sister cafe to Chef Elena Reygadas’s Italian restaurant Rosetta; both are located in Roma Norte. There’s also another location off of Puebla with more seating.

Cafe Nin is a beautiful cafe in La Juarez neighborhood with incredible pastries (from famous Panaderia Rosetta) and delicious food. Sit on the leafy patio on the street, the pretty side patio, or in the beautiful interior, and be sure to order at least one of the fresh pastries.

Be sure to arrive early (not sleeping in!) and stop by Panaderia Rosetta Colima 179, Roma Norte for some freshly ground coffee and a tasty pastry for breakfast. You can tell it’s a local favorite because of the crowds. You might have to battle your way in, but it’s worth it!

The signature guava roll at Panadería Rosetta is our favorite pastry in Mexico. A pocket of juicy guava jam and cream cheese is tucked inside crispy croissant layers. We also really liked the “bolle de romero,” a rosemary roll that had a nice sweet and salty balance.

Panaderia Rosetta is a bakery that’s a feast for your taste buds and your camera. The guava croissants here are not only delicious, but aesthetically pleasing, too. While you’re there, be sure to also grab one (or two) Cardamom rolls – they are to die for!

Rosetta and Contramar are two other spots that came highly recommended by everyone and their mother, but we were, unfortunately, never able to snag reservations for either.

Our friend in the restaurant industry spoke very highly of both Rosetta and Panadería Rosetta and while we didn't have a chance to dine here, I wanted to include a mention.
