Loup was one of the first natural wine bars to open in Mexico City, and it’s still one of the best for unexpected, funky wines—their list is well-curated, with small-batch bottles from all over Europe. The food menu is small, but you can definitely have a full meal here: the juicy wagyu flank steak with perfectly creamy mashed potatoes is the standout entree. If you’re only sort of in a wine mood, ask for a vermouth spritz with a splash of pet nat.

From Gaetan Rousset and Joaquín Cardoso, Loup Bar is part of a new wave of wine-focused spots that puts just as much emphasis on the food. Rousset is a wine importer who focuses on young and rustic wines (mostly natural or biodynamic) from France and Spain, while Cardoso is a young talent whose time spent working in starred European restaurants is evident in his rich food, like lamb with polenta.

Trust your waiter regarding the glorious low-intervention/natural wines, and try everything from the burrata to the lush salads. (Vegetarians will be very happy here.) Just a five-minute walk away is another essential: Rosetta, which provides a romantic and sophisticated, but not uptight, atmosphere.

With world class cocktail bars sprouting up all over Mexico City, doors also open for more niche imbibing concepts—adding more nuanced color to an already vibrant scene. This narrow, subterranean spot in Colonia Roma Norte, not far from La Glorieta de Insurgentes, has one of the DFs best selections of natural, organic, and biodynamic wines. Casa Franca is located on a side street off of Avenida Alvaro Obregon, and you could probably walk by it, never knowing it was a second-floor classy place with live music. It’s hard to not like this bar, as you’ll either be sitting on a stool admiring the beautiful dimly-lit bottles along the walls or sitting in a private room that looks like a living room from a movie set of years past. Most live jazz musicians will start their shows at 10 pm, so check their Facebook page for what’s coming up.

This popular Mexico City natural wine bar has become a mecca for visitors and locals alike. On Loup Bar’s extensive wine list you’ll spot all the usual suspects (Gut Oggau, Strohmeier, Bichi) and, if you’re lucky, you might even find some crazy good deals – on our visit we snagged a shockingly affordable magnum of Lammidia Bianchetto. Sit outside at tables on the street (Paris-style) or inside, and enjoy the good vibes and friendly staff.

He first began importing natural wine into Mexico in 2016 with his brand Loofok, and later went on to open Loup Bar in Colonia Roma in 2017. “When I moved here, almost all wine sold in Mexico City was conventional, but now that’s not the case,” says Rousset. “Our scene has evolved immensely in the last six years and will continue to do so given most new restaurants are focused on product quality, for which natural wine is an obvious fit.

Enormously popular since it opened in 2017, Loup has a list of natural wines that feels immensely overwhelming to the wine neophyte, not to mention the natural wine neophyte. “Nobody’s going to take the time to look at a list this long,” says Serratos, “not when you’re sitting and chatting.”. But our congenial waiter offers to let us taste as many of the by-the-glass options as we like — the list changes daily.

Loup Bar was the first natural wine bar in CDMX that I discovered, and still one of my favourites. I love pulling up a seat on the sidewalk in the afternoon for a glass of wine and a nibble from their solid food menu. I always feel fortunate to imbibing in such a lovely space, where I feel like I’ve transported to a European city, but at the same time I’m deeply aware that I’m in Roma Norte.

Located in the heart of the Roma Norte neighborhood, I wandered over to Loup after some lunch and light shopping through some of the neighborhoods many boutiques. What drew me to this bar was its focus on working with environmentally-friendly wine and food producers as well as its fun logo. I wasn’t able to make room for more food here, but I did enjoy a few glasses of natural orange wine.

Located in a classic old building from the Mexican revolution, where you will find long halls, tall ceilings, wooden floors, and a lot of European art, in this case, wine art. They only have ten tables, which will be filled with small plates to share. Ask for a reservation in the speakeasy upstairs if you want to enjoy a drink and some indie music after dinner.

This quaint little natural wine bar in Roma Norte is the perfect neighborhood bar to hang out at with friends. We personally don’t gravitate towards natural wines because the quality isn’t consistent, but Mexico City is capitalizing on the natural wine trend. If you are into obscure, small-production natural wine, then this place is for you.

Though not all of the food offerings are traditionally Mexican, everything is made with locally sourced, organic ingredients. The cook, Joaquín Cardoso, is super talented and does a mean risotto and flank steak.

Since 2019 Loup has been one of the main stops for those looking for amazing natural wine and delicious french-inspired and small sized bites. With a menu that offers both imported and national bottles friendly for all budgets, this place is perfect for a candle-lit and private first date or for a very lively get-together with friends.

Loup Bar is a pioneer when it comes to the natural wines scene in Mexico. Even before natural wines became popular in Mexico, Loup had a full wine list focused entirely on natural wines. The décor is minimalistic, simple and with clean lines, very similar to what you see in most natural wine bars around the world.

While not a dedicated mezcalería, Loup Bar is known for its excellent wine and mezcal selection, making it an ideal stop if you want to experiment with food pairings. The bartenders can guide you through the menu, offering recommendations that complement both mezcal and their selection of gourmet snacks.

A little slice of Italy in Mexico City, Cafe Ocampo is open all day, as a coffee shop in the morning and turning into a bar in the evening. It is tucked away in Cuauhtémoc and is worth a visit, especially if you fancy an aperitivo or an elegant espresso martini.

However, Local 1, Cicatriz and Loup Bar seem to make all of the lists. Most of these places focus on European wines.
