At this laid-back, low-lit, two-tier cocktail cathedral in throbbing Roma Norte, a small army of skilled mixologists draw on a large selection of rums, tequilas and mescals, and many other spirits, to create eye-catching, exploratory drinks. Mr Pink blends gin, citrus fruits and rosemary syrup, while a house original, the Margarita al Pastor, is inspired by tacos al pastor – that is, a kind of Mexican doner. Both this branch, which is the original, and a newer location in the Polanco neighbourhood (Oscar Wilde 9) have an art deco feel – refined but cool spaces popular with locals as well as visitors.

Many credit the acclaimed Licorería, which opened in the stylish neighborhood of Roma in 2011, with leading the local craft cocktail movement. (A second location in Polanco opened in 2013.) The current menu — it changes twice a year — spotlights the flavors of Latin America, and fittingly, sources ingredients from the region. Tejada, the first female to win the title of Mexico’s World Class Bartender of the Year, in 2015, recommends the Margarita Al Pastor, which mixes silver tequila with bright cilantro, sweet pineapple and smoky chile — flavors found in the beloved taco.

When Licorería Limantour opened in April 2011, it changed the face of the cocktail scene in Mexico, which was barely taking off. The concept is simple, designer cocktails fashioned with all sorts of dynamic ingredients: fresh herbs, flowers, fruits, syrups, shrubs, spices, and rare foreign spirits. Take a seat in the downstairs bar and order a margarita al pastor, a punchy take on the classic marg with flavors inspired by tacos al pastor, a seen-everywhere street eat with pineapple and cilantro.

Limantour is considered a top spot for cocktails in Mexico City, so much so that its mixologists train others across the capital. Cocktail connoisseurs flock here to see the art in action, but it's also popular with a generally trendy crowd. Bartenders mix up creative Mexican-infused takes on classic cocktails, though the food—a snacky selection of small plates like guacamole and tostadas—is a bit of an afterthought.

With drinks that are bitter, sweet, herbal, and incorporate mezcal, gin and bitters in a fusion that evokes the barman of the 20s while simultaneously innovating. It’s all about perpetual motion. It’s not uncommon to find well-known guest bartenders at Limantour and, depending on the season, to participate in themed-contests, like a gin and tonic off or tea-infused cocktails competition.

In addition to Handshake, Mexico City had an impressive seven more bars on the list: Tlecān (No. 3), Licorería Limantour (No. 9), Bar Mauro (No. 14), Baltra Bar (No. 20), Bijou Drinkery Room (No. 34), Hanky Panky (No. 35), Kaito del Valle (No. 40), and Café de Nadie (No. 47).

Licorería Limantour, in Roma Norte, is our favorite destination for cocktails. The elegant Art Deco-inspired space is slightly less packed on weeknights so you can give your meticulously crafted drink the attention it demands.

Mexico City’s increasingly vaunted cocktail scene found its genesis with Licorería Limantour over a decade ago and the institution is still going strong, regularly achieving a top ten listing in The World’s 50 Best Bars. Founder Benjamin Padrón and bar manager José Luis León deliver a congenial party vibe alongside a legendary drinks list. Fresh produce such as mangoes, grapefruits, and nispers (a fruit with a flavour that combines notes of apricots, apples and plums) provide the basis for a cocktail programme heavy on bright, fruit-forward libations like Mr. Pink (gin, rosemary syrup, grapefruit, lime) or the signature Margarita Pastor (tequila, lime and ‘Taco Mix’, which includes pineapple juice, agave syrup, coriander, mint, basil and chilli).

When Licorería Limantour—housed in a two-story, art deco-inspired venue—, opened its doors in 2011, it was widely considered the starting point of Mexico City’s craft cocktail scene. 13 years later, the bar is as strong as ever under the leadership of Benjamin Padrón and José Luis León, whose agave-forward cocktails keep crowds coming through its doors over and over again. Overseen by the ever-welcoming Jose Luis Leon, Limantour may rake in the accolades, but it still retains its laidback Latin vibe, all the while serving up cocktails that would rival creative frontrunners from London or New York.

They were one of the pioneers of great cocktails in the city and focus a lot on mezcal and tequila which I like. But the place (in Roma, I have no idea how the Polanco location is) is always super crowded, loud, and full of tourists now. And I was told and then experienced for myself, that the service is pretty bad (we waited about 45 minutes for a second round of drinks and no one came by in the meantime to even check and see if we want another, plus the staff was indifferent bordering on rude. I still like their cocktails, but for a better overall experience I would go somewhere else.

There’s no better place to post up, enjoy the day (or night), and people watch than at the city’s go-to cocktail destination in the Roma neighborhood. The bar may be more than a decade old, but it continues to delight guests with a menu that rotates every six months, while keeping mainstays like their Mexican old-fashioned (a whisky-based cocktail, fat-washed with cacao and nutmeg) on the menu. Its seasonal menu features inventive cocktails using local ingredients like the whiskey-based, lobster mushroom drink with butter.

No bars in Mexico City deliver better cocktails than Licorería Limantour – at least, none that we’ve visited yet!. We went there for just for one cocktail to see what all the fuss was about and ended up staying most of the evening exploring the menu and chatting to other couples. Licorería Limantour’s buzzy atmosphere is partly down to its longevity.

Restaurants like Azul Condesa, Quintonil and Pujol celebrate the spirit with smart collections, and great bottles are also stocked at bars like Felina, Licoreria Limantour, and Mexicano. Want something more outside the box?. There’s an agave spirits museum with an adjacent cantina called La Cantina del Museo, for a little education with your mezcal.

Licorería Limantour was also on my list because it’s the fourth-best bar in the world (dubbed by the famed 50 Best Bars list). Second to only Handshake Speakeasy, this bar had a chill and relaxed vibe with lots of seating and available reservations. It’s located in Roma Norte and near some great taco carts if you get hungry at the end of the night.

Named the best bar in North America for the past two years, Licorería Limantour is rightfully an institution. Renowned for its innovative cocktails — most infused with a touch of Mexico — the two-story bar has been a trailblazer in Mexico City’s mixology scene and continues to be the OG while the world around it picks up. The food is equally tasty.

With now two locations, the original Licorería was deemed a key player in setting the scene for Mexico City’s cocktail movement. The menu boasts a variety of over 30 cocktails that use an extensive selection of spirits as well as flavors from Mexico and other parts of Latin America. The Art Deco-inspired bar feels chic without being pompous.

Licoreria Limantour is often considered to be one of the Top 50 bars in the world (#6 during our visit) much like how nearby Pujol is often considered to be in the Top 50 restaurants (#9 during our visit). Naturally, with a reputation like that, we knew we had to visit shortly after our arrival in Mexico City. This one lives up to its hype.

In the past few years, more and more mixology bars have popped up in the city's most upscale neighborhoods from Polanco to Condesa, and the bar on the forefront of the trend is the Licoreria Limantour. Here, the bar staff are seriously skilled mixologists, and the menu is pages long, with a number of seasonal options that changes often.

Present on the World’s Best Bars list since 2014, Licorería Limantour is #4 on the list this year. The Roma Norte location has a fun atmosphere with a few high tables on the sidewalk, a long bar in the front room, and more tables in the back and on the second floor. The bartenders are upbeat and bilingual.

Limantour stayed steady at #9 this year, proving once again what a crowd favorite they remain after 14 years in the business. They have deliciously hand-crafted cocktails, many of which focus on Mexico’s two most famous spirits – tequila and mezcal. That’s one of theirs at the top of this post.

There are 2 locations of Limantour in Mexico City – one in Polanco and one in Roma Norte. Being that we lived in Roma Norte, we only had the chance to visit that one. It is a really popular bar in Mexico City and has been rated as one of the best cocktail bars in the world.

Not far from Casa Franca on popular Avenida Álvaro Obregón in Roma Norte, you’ll find one of the most popular Mexico City bars. Limantour has a few locations in the city, but the one in Roma tends to be the most fun — and was voted #4 on the 50 Best Bars in the World list.

Once we took our first sip of our cocktail, we could immediately see why it was ranked #7 on the World's 50 Best Bars list. These cocktails may look simple, but their flavours are unbelievably complex, changing throughout each sip. We can't wait to go back to try more.

Maybe we shouldn’t have visited Baltra Bar on the first night because expectations were now quite high. Licorería Limantour was Mexico City’s first cocktail bar, led by Benjamin Padrón and José Luis Leon. It holds the #32 spot on the World’s Best Bars.
