The logo says "tradición desde 1970," but in fact El Parnita is a more recent addition to Roma's lunch scene: a hip, updated take on the simple family-owned fonda. The menu consists of antojitos (snacks like tacos, tostadas, and ceviches), from recipes culled from the family's travels throughout the country, such as rellenito, a chipotle chile stuffed with cheese and beans in a sauce of piloncillo (unrefined brown sugar) from Zacatecas; and tacos viajeros, homemade tortillas piled with pork loin and leg long cooked in citrus, from Michoacán. While it's a hugely popular spot for trendy types, local workers and families come too, enjoying it for the affordable neighborhood restaurant it is at its core.

El Parnita tends to get packed after 3pm on Thursdays and Fridays, with people lingering over margaritas, micheladas, and cubas. The classic Mexican pop and cumbia blaring from the speakers and the lively crowds make this one of the most festive restaurants in the area—and potentially the entire city. All their tacos are served on a homemade blue corn tortilla, and the taco carmelita with breaded shrimp and the zacatlan with zucchini are must-orders.

If you go to El Parnita for lunch on a Friday, you won't leave until well after dinnertime. It's one of the coolest little taquerias in town and known for a lingering hipster clientele. The off-menu chapulínes are a crunchy delicacy, and will make you happy to be picking grasshopper legs out of your teeth.

El Parnita is a fonda (small restaurant) in the Roma barrio where they specialize in antiojitos, or corn-based street snacks. EL PARNITA: Located in Roma Norte, this is an easy taco spot with crowded tables, a patio, three different salsas already on your table. The offerings are large but a bit more particular- no chicken- and lots of pork FYI. I loved the Shrimp Taco with Guacamole and Salsa Rellenito (this is the best salsa/sauce I had all trip).

Their signature dishes include Tacos Carmelita: breaded shrimp, with purple onions and a special secret sauce.

Serving small plates of Mexican street food, El Parnita is an open-air affair in Colonia Roma. Known for its variety of tacos and a killer habanero salsa, it’s a relaxed, vibey place to end up in for lunch.

El Parnita is one of my favorite places to hang out and eat on an afternoon and people watch. It’s right in the center of Roma Norte and is always busy. The food is yummy, the atmosphere laid back but fun.

We also tried tacos de canasta at Taquería El Flaco, but we ate those tacos immediately that I didn't get to take a picture. It was also packed and hard to move around at that taqueria.

A local favorite, very crowded, good spot to people watch, drink mezcal, eat good tacos and seafood. Try arriving before 2 p.m.
