From the colonial dining room, with walls that are filled with old photographs of Mérida in the early 1900s, the view stretches to the brilliant flamboyant trees that fringe the expansive grounds. Try the classics: sopa de lima, a fragrant chicken and tortilla soup flavored with lime juice (54 pesos, or about $4, at 13.7 pesos to the dollar); cochinita pibil, tangy slow-roasted pork marinated in citrus and a paste made from achiote seeds; or poc chuc, grilled pork marinated in sour orange juice (both 124 pesos).

A henequen plantation in the 17th century, this beautiful hacienda just outside Mérida serves some of the best regional food around, primarily attracting well-to-do Meridanos for a leisurely lunch (let that be your guide on what to wear). Start with sopa de lima, then move on to standout mains like poc chuc (slices of pork in a sour-orange sauce) or cochinita pibil—both served with homemade tortillas—perhaps followed by dessert, which comes with a complimentary digestif. After your meal, stroll through the gardens where peacocks roam.

For dinner, head downtown to the recently opened restaurant from Hacienda Teya. The main hacienda, located just outside the city, was founded in 1683; originally known for its production of henequen, an agave used for fiber, it eventually became known for its kitchen. Like the legendary original, the new urban outpost turns out pitch-perfect variations of traditional dishes like sopa de lima, a chicken consommé fragrant with the local bergamot of the region, and excellent cocktails.

If you fancy somewhere a little out of town that’s surrounded by, say, peacocks and deer, this traditional Mexican hacienda fits the bill. The country estate dates back to 1682 and was rescued from ruin almost 50 years ago. Regional classics such as queso fundido (melted cheese with chorizo), sopa de lima (chicken lime soup) and cochinita pibil are exemplary here; some say the best you’ll find anywhere.

Built during colonial times, the first two centuries of prosperity of this estate were due to livestock, the cultivation of corn and other agricultural activities; in the nineteenth century it became a henequen hacienda for a few years after being destroyed and abandoned with the changing times. It is one of thefavorite places for many visitors and locals. Now it offers exquisite Yucatecan food that has received two national awards.

Okay, technically this doesn’t come under the breakfast category as Hacienda Teya doesn’t actually open early enough for us to class it solely as breakfast. So we are including it as a brunch option, for those who are looking to get out beyond the periferico of Merida. Yucatecans eat later anyway so why not join them?

Especially the restaurant Valentina at Hacienda Santa Cruz is, in my opinion, one of the best in Mérida because the atmosphere and the great food come together in perfect harmony.
