What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Chong Chon Biscuit Maker is celebrated for its unique take on traditional Chinese pastries, particularly its Siew Pau and generously sized puffs. While many praise the authentic flavors and heritage, some reviews note a departure from past recipes and inconsistencies in texture, with a few finding the biscuits dry or the meat tough. Despite mixed feedback on specific items, the establishment maintains a loyal following for its decades-old tradition and local charm.
"Very nice curry puff and siew pau pastries. I arrived on a Saturday noon and they only had these 2 flavours left. Prices were on the higher side but it’s justified as the portions were large and each pastry was heavy and packed full of filling.
Taste wise the siew pau is very different from the Seremban variety, and the curry puff is quite unique - the filling reminded me of the Japanese curry pan instead but with local spices.
If you want the century pie you need to call them to reserve it. Either first thing in the morning for a noon+ collection, or on Saturday for collection on Sunday.
Accepts cash only."

"this was our family childhood favourite which was best in Kuching, but we had no longer ate their baked bun for a very long time, I recently came and buy their siew paw which the ingredients inside was totally different from the pass, the meat used now are mince pork which before was small little sliced of pork meat with darker juicy sweet sause in it, now the taste was terrible the recipe has just totally change."

"Chong Chon Biscuit in Kuching offers a unique experience with their yam pastry and siew pao handmade on the spot by a friendly, chatty old grandma.
The size of their pastries is humongous compared to West Malaysian versions. While the taste is alright, I found the pastry skin thick and it’s also quite oily, which wasn't to my preference. Overall, it's worth a try for the authentic experience and generous portions."

A short 5-minute walk from Carpenter Street will bring you to India Street, which mainly sells textiles. We’re here, however, for the baked buns and pastries at two of the finest confectionary shops in Kuching, Chong Chon Biscuit Maker and Tong Kee. We tried the curry puff, egg tart, and siew pau (roasted pork buns) from both, and to be honest, couldn’t quite tell the difference – both were equally good.

I headed to Kai Joo Lane but I was too full to eat my favourite sio pao (baked meat buns)…sold at the shop there, Chong Chon, that I had frequented since way back in the 70’s. However, I did buy one and one of their curry puffs for tea later that afternoon and yes, they were so so so good!
