Reviews Summary

Sek Yuen Restaurant is lauded for its authentic Cantonese cuisine and nostalgic ambiance, with many highlighting the iconic Pei Pa Duck and other traditional dishes. While generally praised for flavor and quality, some diners note that the prices can be a bit high, and communication with English-speaking staff can occasionally be a challenge.

"Absolutely superb. Loved every dish photographed. All the eggy dishes were demolished swiftly, as was the soft shell crab. The soup was delicious. The fried rice, pig trotter in chestnut stew and prawn paste fried chicken tasted great the next day as leftovers too."

Dr Jade Kua

"Delicious food, though a bit on the pricey side.
We ordered the fried shrimp with salad and mayo (RM40), tofu with pumpkin sauce, and stir-fried veggies. With these 3 dishes , 2 glasses of tea and 2 plates of rice , total cost was 90 MYR.
Everything was tasty, though the veggies could’ve used a bit more salt.

Overall, it’s a good place to dine—just better enjoyed with 3–4 people so you can share more dishes. Not ideal for a two-person meal unless you’re ready to splurge a little."

leotrails

"This old-timer has been around for more than half a century and still delivers decently good Cantonese fares. Their signature pipa duck was excellent - it wasn't too fatty unlike many restauranters who favor using plump fowl. We had a really fresh steamed grouper and the ying yang noodles was also well executed.
Interestingly this place isn't on the tourist radar - we came on a Sunday for lunch and the place wasn't crowded at all."

The 15 Best Restaurants In Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Acknowledged as one of Kuala Lumpur’s oldest restaurants, Sek Yuen has 70-plus years under its belt. This old-school Chinese restaurant is still powered by cast-iron woks roaring over charcoal fires, and until a few years ago, one could still hear the clack-clack of the abacus as they tallied up patron’s bills. “It’s an institution!

Best Restaurants in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (Must Try Local Foods)

Sek Yuen Restoran serves some of the best Chinese-Malay food I personally have ever had in Kuala Lumpur, but I am not the only one I’m sure – Sek Yuen has been faithfully serving great food for generations – for 70 years to be precise!. Seeing the amount of elderly local Chinese-Malay families already sitting down inside only served to build my excitement (its one of the little things that I have learned to look for when trying to pick out a delicious restaurant before actually eating there). Straight to the action here, and the first plate of food you simply have to order is by starting off with their specialty item – Pei Pa Duck (roast duck).

Comparatively, Sek Yuen Restaurant may appear like low-hanging fruit where recommendations for old-school Chinese fare are concerned. Housed in a pre-war shop lot where lengthwise real estate affords a sizeable capacity for tables lit under fluorescence, dishes here take after an unfettered tether with tradition under the trained hands of a head chef whose expertise has fed the city since the eatery’s inception. Wizened hands work the wok to serve portions of relatively humdrum but no less commendable Cantonese food, including the all-too-rare jellied chicken, evocative of American aspics, served chilled.
