What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Hiap Joo Bakery is celebrated for its traditional charcoal-baked banana cake and buns, with many praising the moist texture and nostalgic flavors. However, some find the hype disproportionate to the taste, with a few reviews mentioning the bread being dry or lacking flavor. The long queues are a common theme, but service is often described as quick.
"my review is for 3 items.
banana cake, peanut bread and coconut bread.
I had a slice of warm banana bread when I was in my car, tears welled my eyes and I started crying because it was so good.
then i took a bite out of my peanut bread and I realized what happiness was again.
finally when I took a bite off the coconut bread I heard the back of my shirt tearing. then I saw wings growing from behind and I started flying.
I flew to KSL and gave one extra box of banana cake to a pharmacist because she looked cute.
10/10 would return to buy banana cake when I want to queue with people."
Cupie Oon
"23/7/25 around 12:30pm — Chanced upon the Banana cake vending machine at Senja Hawker Centre in Bukit Panjang, SG. The delivery man was replenishing the stocks and there was a queue of 6 ahead.
Bought 2 cakes ‘cos our family wanted to try! Finally!
* Price: 1 cake S$8.60, 2 cakes S$8.30.
SG prices are more than twice the RM13 in JB - convenience comes at a cost for us!
* Packaging - neatly packed in a transparent box
* Pre-sliced into 10 PCs - each piece is two mouthfuls
* Colour - good looking brown cake
* Fragrance - ZERO banana fragrance!
* Texture - moist & fluffy
* Taste - not overly sweet (unlike our Bengawan Solo Pandan cake)
* Butter, margerine or oil - there is ZERO butter taste so this banana cake is likely made of margerine or oil but there is no oily aftertaste
Verdict 👎👎👎👎👎
- This is a fluffy, moist and good looking cake but as die-hard fans of banana cake, this Hiap Joo version didn’t live up to the hype and we don’t understand the fuss over it. Maybe its long history evokes a sense of nostalgia.
For us, ONCE IS ENOUGH because we prefer our banana cakes to be made with real banana and butter."

"We were there to buy take away the famous and delicious banana cake.
Theres no dine in at this bakery, only take aways.
Though theres a long queue, the service was quick. We bought a total of 15 boxes to give to friends at home.
The cake is very soft and moist but not too sweet.
Worth the wait, will be back on our next visit."

Shooting Churches, Eating Noodles (Year XVIII): JOHOR BAHRU
Yes, Tueday was the big day but Sang Heng (circa 1950s) remained closed, maybe forever, and I don't really like banana cake so I left Hiap Joo Bakery (circa 1919) for a pack of kaya buns at Salahuddin Bakery (circa 1937) before a late afternoon breakfast of kaya toasts, soft boiled egg and hot tea at Restoran Hua Mui (1946) that should have been the sop kambing I craved for because dinner, although free, is a disappointing bowl of fish that someone choose for me because I asked him to.
