While the food consistently receives high praise, some reviews mention inconsistent or less-than-friendly service, and prices are noted as being on the higher side for Riga.

"I still have the first memory of coming to this cafe last year January, on a very cold winter. Everything seemed so lifeless and gray in Latvia until I found this place. The smell of croissants and coffee and very nice music that goes along with the atmosphere completely changed the mood of my day.
Not just pastries and salad are good, but also the cakes are demuring. I personally recommend the traditional cake Napoleon. I have tried in many different cafes in Latvia to compare the taste. However, none of them has won over Kūkotava yet.
The locals have known this place since long, while nowadays many tourists come as well to enjoy brunch or dessert after a meal.
Hope you go and give yourself a nice treat.
Never bad to start a day with a sweet cake and a warm coffee🍰☕️"

"This is the 4th time I am here (the smaller salad bar at the corner, not the main cafe) and I can say that it has been very consistent with the taste and service. Super delicious salad and the pastries are great too. The price is on the high end for Riga standard but hey, if it taste good, it’s worth it. The only small criticism is the platting can be improved even though it is a salad - see pic below how they gave it to me, and how I make them look more presentable for myself ;)."

Several restaurants in Riga are included in an essential Scandinavian gastronomy guide
Food & travel bloggers and gastronomy industry experts Anders Husa and Kaitlin Orr visited 23 catering establishments in Riga for a week and gave their assessment. In order to present Riga's gastronomic offer, the guide includes public catering places such as the restaurants "MAX Cekot", "Tails", "Barents", "3Pavāri", etc. However, to make the picture complete, such places typical of Riga as "Kalve Cafe" were also evaluated.
Where to Eat in Riga, Latvia
The charming café is split into two sections, one for French-inspired viennoiserie (croissants and baked goods) and another which focuses more on patisserie (cakes and sweets). We spent our time primarily on the bakery side, where we indulged in a cinnamon croissant, a classic canelé, a Pain Suisse, and, our favorite, a laminated pastry sandwich filled with ham and Gruyère, served warm.

Recently undergoing a fresh renovation, Kūkotava welcomes gourmets in new and chic premises. The cafe writes about itself: "Celebration every day" and it's really hard to disagree, especially when you've tasted one of the mouth-watering cakes of the pastry shop. Incomparable flavor nuances and a pleasant atmosphere are the things that characterize Kūkotava.
The Best Cafes in Riga
A made-up Latvian word that means “cake place,” Kūkotava is a Riga institution. The café interior has been given an elegant French-inspired makeover, matching the beauty of its wonderful cakes, pies, and pastries. Kūkotava has recently expanded into the space next door, offering salads and sandwiches, though I’ve not tried these yet.
