Reviews Summary

Barents offers an exceptional fine dining experience, lauded for its innovative use of local produce and exquisite seafood. Guests rave about the impeccable service and the unique flavors, with many suggesting it deserves Michelin recognition. While most reviews are glowing, a few diners noted issues with pacing and a preference for lighter sauces.

"This restaurant needs to have their star! Incredible food, incredible service, incredible experience. We had the seafood platter, the trout, and scallops and complimentary oysters. The chefs are personable and go to your table to explain the food.

Their sourdough bread and caramelized butter were SO amazing that I went back and special ordered it two days later.

They definitely made me feel like a princess. Do not miss out on this experience!

One of the members in our party has an intolerance, and the chef personally came over to our table to ensure the safety of our friend. They went above and beyond to cater to us.

Also shout out to Katrina for being the best hostess/waitress in Latvia!!"

Phi Nguyen

"I was having dinner there during the restaurant week. Very good food and tasty combinations to explore goods from the sea. I appreciate the old fashioned way to get a glass of wine instead the modern device they had that prickled your glass. Other than that all good."

G M

"The pacing between dishes needs significant refinement. From the time the amuse bouche was served, it was a whole 20 minutes before the next dish arrived.
The dishes were all quite heavy with cream sauce. I would prefer a lighter, thinner consistency. Overall, the dishes lacked creativity. The heavy cream sauces overshadowed any potential for originality."

Hangars, History & Harvests: How Riga’s Chefs Use Central Market Produce

For Artūrs Trinkuns, Head Chef at Barents, the market plays a central role in operations. Relationships with stallholders hinge on a balance of trust and routine; Trinkuns places repeat orders and a representative from Barents visits at least once on a weekly basis, usually each Tuesday. There’s something about that eclectic seasonality that’s hard to shake, though.

The best places to eat and drink in Riga, Latvia’s under-the-radar hotspot

Scandinavians with an aptitude for low-key (sort of) multi-course fine dining will feel right at home at Barents, a minimally (and exceptionally) designed destination offering a tasting menu built around Northern ingredients. Chef Dzintars Kristovskis and his team are perfectly plating melt-in-your-moth scallops, truffle-heavy croquettes and crudo in the shape of a rose. And if the tasting menu is too daunting, there’s also a la carte and a more relaxed cocktail bar, also serving bites and bar food (including both a fish and a venison burger).
