"We enjoyed our evening with live music, amazing cocktails and delicious food. It was fully booked but somehow at last minute we got a table. Just book in advance in case you want to visit on weekends to avoid disappointment. The Ambience is like a cave and the servers are very gentle and professional too. Our guide recommended this place so we tried and it was worth trying."

Deepsikha Majhi

"This place was recommended by our local tour guide. We had an absolutely wonderful experience at this restaurant. I ordered the grilled pork ribs in beer marinate and it was hands down one of the best dish I’ve ever had. The meat was fall-off-the-bone tender and melted in my mouth.

Also our waitress recommended the traditional battered chicken fillet folk club style, which was creamy and juicy inside.

We loved their ginger beer (ingwer beer). It was refreshing and a perfect pairing either way our meals.

The waitress was incredibly attentive, friendly and made us feel genuinely welcomed. Highly recommend!"

The 10 Best Bars In Riga, Latvia

For a rustic Latvian experience in the heart of Riga, head to the “folk club” ALA Pagrabs, a surprisingly gigantic bar and restaurant entirely underground ( pagrabs means basement). The long wooden table which guests share, Eastern European snacks and dishes, and labyrinthine layout with cozy nooks and crannies call to mind an old-time tavern, something the management is keen to encourage by organizing folk concerts and dances. ALA’s main asset is its selection of 28 beers on tap, the largest in Riga.

If I had to recommend one place which you must visit for Latvian food in Riga it would have to be Folkklubs ALA, an underground tavern in Riga’s Old Town with the widest range of Latvian beers in the city, contemporary Latvian food and live local music. It’s extremely popular with locals and tourists alike and is a great place to spend the entire night from dinner to late-night drinks (the venue stays open until 6am). Ala” is maybe the most well-known bar in all of Riga, and still manages to boast a phenomenal beer list from the larger independent Latvian breweries. This huge basement venue is home to some of the best local folk dancing you’ll see, along with huge hearty meals and jovial bartenders. A great night out is guaranteed, and on the beer front they keep it simple: you’re essentially choosing from either “light” or “dark” beer across six or seven breweries, so decide your time of day and order away – you can’t really go wrong.

The best cheap eats in Riga, Latvia - budget restaurants

We went to several bars and restaurants during our time in Riga but this cavernous inn was our highlight, so much so that we went back every day. We are happy to report beer prices are cheaper than most old town bars (e.g. 5 Euros for two large dark beers – our favourite!) and the interiors are very atmospheric. With live music most nights, Folkklubs is always heaving (although each time we visited we eventually managed to get a table – just have patience and pick your moment carefully).

Two days in Riga – exploring the Latvian capital

Folkkluba ala pagrabs – Our last evening before heading home so we wandered along a few streets to one of the places famed for Latvian ale. Descending to the basement, the scene greeting us was a bit overwhelming with every table full and a crowd around the bar. “Just find a space” said the waiter, so spotting a bench at a table opposite a couple, all three of us sat side by side across from strangers.
